Your Safety is Our First Priority
HPBA, in conjunction with Nashville’s Music City Center, Nashville Convention and Visitors Corporation (CVC), and Freeman, are closely monitoring the COVID-19 pandemic. As we make plans to meet in person next March, we are actively putting together cleaning and safety protocols for the safety of all of our exhibitors and attendees. This is an on-going process, so be sure to regularly check Nashville’s Music City Center for updates for their health and safety guidelines as well as our website for updates. Freeman has to put together a video on what events of the future may look like, and the Nashville CVC has put together a Good to Go plan for local city businesses.
Elevate Your Skills
How do you stay ahead of your competitors and keep up with the latest industry news and topics? Education!

“Moving Forward” can mean a few different things, but to Ted Topping, President of Creative Insights Inc, it’s about embracing our #NewNormal. Join him on his five-part education series at HPBExpo that will help you develop new strategies, learn procedures and systems, set up virtual options, and empower your employees as we adapt to the new way of doing business. This is just one example of something you can learn at Expo.
HPBExpo is offering an education program focused on the hottest topics in the industry, including safety and liability, business management, development, and troubleshooting. Developed by the Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Education Foundation (HPBEF) and designed to complement the exhibits, you will have access to more than 30 sessions that address every aspect of your business from optimizing your showroom to gaining manufacturer-specific training—plus Continuing Education Units (CEUs) to renew
your NFI or CSIA certifications.

For the second year in a row, online exams will be available onsite. Attendees can take exams throughout HPBExpo 2021 by registering for an allotted time of their choosing. With ten computers available, space will be limited and registering early will be critical in getting the date and time that works best for you. Additionally, the exams will be graded upon submission, providing almost instantaneous results. For complete details, contact the NFI Office at 703-524-8030.

Sign up for Text Alerts About NSPS Sell-Through for Step 1 Products
With the start of the heating season upon us, we know how busy everyone is with customers. EPA still has not published a Final Rule providing any length of sell-through for Step 1 products. It is still illegal to sell a Step 1 product. The sell-through period would come into effect if and when a Final Rule is published in the Federal Register. Based on the language in the proposal, any sell-through period would likely expire after November 30, 2020.

If you would like to receive a text message from us when we receive any definitive news about sell-through, text “NSPS” to 313131.

Be sure to check out our retailer NSPS toolkit and FAQ page for additional resources. Many questions you may have are likely answered on our FAQ page. For other questions, please contact Rachel Feinstein.
Keeping an Eye on Gas Bans
HPBA staff is working to build and strengthen coalitions with other trade associations to effectively address the increasing number of initiatives to ban gas in new construction at both local and state levels. This is a major issue for many national trade associations. HPBA staff is at the center of conversations with other trade associations to look for common strategies and coordination.

HPBA is also strengthening ties with the National Propane Gas Association (NPGA). NPGA and HPBA Affiliates share many members, and several HPBA manufacturers are very active in that market. This working relationship will allow our joint memberships to collaboratively address this issue at the state level, meaning all of our resources can stretch a little further. This will be particularly important as state legislators begin filing proposed bills for state legislative sessions that begin in January. We fully expect a flurry of legislative efforts concerning energy choice – ranging from outright bans on gas to prohibitions on states restricting consumers’ fuel choice – in 2021. Designed to Sell: How to Increase Sales of BBQ, Grills and Cooking Accessories.

Josh Tahan – True Craft BBQ (Instagram @TrueCraftBBQ)
Josh has been helping retailers across the country to sell a variety of grilling products and accessories through in-store demos, cooking classes, and events for over eight years. One of the most compelling cases you, as a retailer, can make for the products you sell is through the power of the demo. Demonstrations at your store do not have to be costly and do not need to take up valuable staff time and resources. There are ways to easily train and empower your associates or work with passionate individuals in your area to help increase sales for your products.
In this course, expect to learn the tips, techniques and proven strategies for increasing sales through hands on opportunities at your store. Attendees taking part in this class can expect to learn:

  • How to set up demonstrations, classes or in-depth technical experiences for a variety of products.
  • How to find and retain talented individuals in the community to help sell your products, or grow your sales associates into selling machines.
  • Proven talking points & sales tools designed to maximize every customer-engagement.
  • What information & support you need to request from the brands you represent.
It's no secret that sales of any number of products increase when customers have the chance to sample or experience the benefits first hand; just ask Sam's Club or Costco. Josh has experience working with small independents, large independents, chains and national brands. His experience and knowledge can help a variety of HPBExpo attendees, no matter the size of their operation, have the necessary information and confidence to begin a culture of showing, not telling, in 2021.

We are eager for feedback or suggestions, so please reach out to Diane Dellen with your ideas.
Covid-19 Resources
We’ve all been challenged this year to find new ways to do business. The HPBA staff continues to work from home, doing our best to support our members. Our manufacturers implemented safety protocols to keep their factories open. And our retailers continue to deal with selling and servicing their products while keeping their employees and customers safe. In support of these efforts, HPBA hosted a couple of webinars this spring with expert advice on meeting these challenges. Recordings of these webinars are still available on the COVID-19 page on the HPBA website:

Making Lemonade Out of COVID Lemons – tips and tricks for virtual marketing and sales
Keeping Safe – best practices for a healthy and safe store

The COVID-19 webpage has other information that is still helpful, so check it out!
HPBA has a new banking relationship with Bank of America, and our SunTrust accounts are now closed. For wiring information, please contact Robert Washington.
