ABOUT AMERICORPS

AmeriCorps is a national service program that provides opportunities for individuals to serve their communities in many different ways. In exchange for a living stipend, health benefits, educational award and valuable on-the-job experience, members serve for one year, helping mentor students, train job-seekers, conserve public land, and much more!

Did you know, 1 in 5 adults in Duval County are at the lowest literacy levels and have considerable difficulty comprehending print material?

To address this community need, AmeriCorps members will be selected and managed by the Literacy Alliance, and spend their service year, improving adult literacy in Northeast Florida. Funding is provided by AmeriCorps and administered by Volunteer Florida.

How can you help? We are recruiting individuals who are passionate about education, helping others, and wanting to make an impact in North Florida. The job duties range from teaching small group classes (reading, math and language), tutoring, student assessments and follow-up, and more!

For more information, email [email protected] or call (904) 238-9000. To apply directly, visit this link.

We will be recruiting now with training set to start in August.

THE LITERACY ALLIANCE CELEBRATES JUNETEENTH - OUR NEWEST FEDERAL HOLIDAY!

Literacy Alliance students regularly learn about civics and history as part of their lessons. This time they got to witness history in the making! President Biden signed legislation and issued a proclamation that made Juneteenth, June 19, the newest federal holiday in the United States. “This is a day of profound weight and profound power, a day in which we remember the moral stain, the terrible toll that slavery took on the country and continues to take,” said Biden at the bill signing ceremony.

The Literacy Alliance views equality as the most vital part to the world's success. We are thrilled to see this kind of progress being made!

WELCOME NEW TEACHERS AND STAFF!

The Literacy Alliance is happy to introduce our Adult Education Director, Lindsay Geoffrey! Lindsay will manage the adult education classes, teachers and all the details ensuring our students receive exceptional instruction and meet their educational goals and objectives. She will also help recruit, train, and manage our new AmeriCorps Members as they join our team in August. In addition, Lindsay was an AmeriCorps Member herself with the Teach for America program in Miami. She has a diverse background in education, inculding ESL, and banking. Lindsay follows the life philosophy, "Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better." - Maya Angelou

Also welcome Elizabeth Lawrence! Elizabeth has a background in teaching adult education classes, creative writing, and documentary film making! She will be teaching a Reading/Language Arts GED course and providing instruction in the correctional facilities as they re-open to adult education classes. You are a wonderful addition to the team.

Welcome to Lynn Randall and Bernadette Stone! They are both current teachers in Duval County and working with us this summer. Lynn is teaching a reading class and two math classes. Bernadette is scheduling new student registrations and testing students who have 50+ hours of instruction. We are so grateful to have you both!

Boohoo! A bittersweet farwell to Sherri Jackson who left the Literacy Alliance in May. We wish her well in her new position with the Jacksonville Public Library, where we know she will continue to be an advocate for the Literacy Alliance. And warm farewell to Gene Sheridan. He's been a dedicated volunteer since 2014 - teaching classes, tutoring, and computer lab. Thank you for helping students reach their goals!

DONOR SPOTLIGHT

The Literacy Alliance has been awarded a one-year grant by Florida Blue Foundation and the Florida Literacy Coalition. This will integrate health and nutrition information into our curriculum. The focus is to help adult learners acquire the knowledge, literacy skills, and resources that will help them navigate the medical system and make informed health decisions.

Thank you to the following organizations who support our adult education classes and the launch of the Adult Literacy Corps:

  • Dollar General Literacy Foundation
  • Bank of America
  • Kirbo Family Foundation
  • Arthur Vining Davis Foundations
  • Jim Moran Foundation
  • The Donald C. McGraw Foundation

A huge thank you to Blue Star Families for donating over 100 brand-new books and book series to our library. Because of donations like these, the Literacy Alliance is able to provide group instruction, where students can read and discuss novels together.

Ken has shared his lesson plans and techniques amongst all of our new and returning staff and tutors, his impact is invaluable and our students are so lucky to have and mentor like Ken. Thank you for everything you've done!
