Administration

Welcome to the SFNS team!

Koolamalsi Njoosak! How are you my friends!

Nii Ndushiinzi My name is Wahbuhnung Snake, I am the new Finance Officer. Nii Noonjiiyayi Munsee, I am from Munsee-Delaware Nation, and I was born and raised there. I was raised by a strong single mama and a residential school survivor. I am a proud Lenape Kwe, and I walk with the Bear. I have 3 children and 1 brand new grandson!

I’ve worked in my community for most of my career. I started working as a gas attendant in high school to earn cash and meet people to get out of my shyness. Then, I attended College for a health career and found out that Chemistry was way too difficult. So, I got a job as a file clerk/receptionist at the Munsee Administration office. And I slowly graduated up to Finance Clerk, Coordinator, and Interim Manager. After many years working in a First Nation Administration Office, I gained a lot of accounting experience and decided to obtain my Certified Aboriginal Finance Management Certification from AFOA, the Aboriginal Financial Officers Association. I am proud and grateful to be working with the SFNS Team!

Laap uch kuneewal (see you later)!

Part 3: Speak Kindly, You’re Listening Webinar Series

March 6, 2025

Award winning international speaker and best-selling author Dr. Jessica Metcalfe facilitated the Speak Kindly, You’re Listening webinar series. Part 3 saw 10 participants join us on-line for the wrap-up session, where we delved into the transformative power of self-talk. Participants learned how to transform their inner voices as it can profoundly impact our emotional, mental, and physical well-being.

The session reviewed the three pillars of understanding burnout which includes exhaustion, mental distance, and the feeling of less than. The recovery framework to burnout includes identifying what rest looks like for the individual, resetting expectations, and building internal validation and implementing boundaries for oneself. The perfectionism cycle was unpacked with an examination on how to reframe our thinking style and experiment with behaviours.

When moving from a critic to a champion one must examine their inner voice, alter thoughts, substitute words, and evaluate how you react. Emotional intelligence helps us recognize, understand and manage our own emotions and emotions of others. This knowledge improves the ability to lead, build strong team dynamics, handle high-stress situations better, and allow for more effective problem solving.

We hope this webinar series empowered participants with the insights and tools needed to embrace and connect with their inner champion.

Aamjiwnaang First Nation Citizen Awarded

Coronation Medal

PETAWAWA – An Indigenous sergeant in the Canadian military has been honoured with a King Charles III Coronation Award. Jeff Plain, a member of Aamjiwnaang First Nation in southwestern Ontario, received his accolade at a recent battalion ceremony at the Canadian Forces Base in Petawawa, where he is currently stationed.

The town of Petawawa is about 160 kilometres northwest of the Canadian capital of Ottawa. A total of 30,000 Canadians will be awarded the medal, which was created to mark the coronation of King Charles, which took place in May of 2023.

Those who receive the award have made a significant contribution in the country or attained an outstanding achievement that brings credit to Canada. “It’s more or less just a medal of recognizing achievements in the community,” Plain said. The 36-year-old has participated as the head veteran at various pow wows, mostly in his First Nation.

Cultural Resurgence And Food Sovereignty: Revitalizing Traditional Practices With The Oneida Nation

Of The Thames

The Oneida Nation of the Thames, part of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, is a vibrant Indigenous community in Southern Ontario with a rich history of resilience and self-determination. Traditional agricultural practices and food sovereignty have long been central to Oneida culture, fostering a deep connection to the land. However, colonial policies, land dispossession, and environmental degradation have disrupted these practices, resulting in environmental injustices and food insecurity.

This project examines the revitalization of Oneida agricultural traditions as a pathway to cultural resurgence and community resilience. My research emphasizes the collaborative development of sustainable food systems rooted in Oneida knowledge, highlighting the community's capacity to adapt to the health and environmental risks posed by climate change. Data collection has been undertaken in partnership with the Oneida Nation, particularly the Onyota'a:ká Clan Mothers, and includes collaborations with honours students and undergraduate field schools.
