WEAC Region 3 Member Earns National Board Certification
|
Shannon Glenn
is in his 15th year of teaching Science at Kimberly High School. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Biology and Chemistry in 1994, and his teaching certification in 1999, both from Lawrence University. He later received his Master’s Degree in Education (Pedagogy) from Viterbo University in 2009. “National Board Certification made me aware of how closely tied the goals of KASD are with what is taught in this process” he said, “Teachers are the number one factor for student success; I hope that my being certified will help my students to achieve their goals.”

Here are a couple of reminders. First, please consider nominating yourself as a delegate for the NEA and/or WEAC Representative Assemblies. I just completed my own WEAC RA application and it took less than 5 minutes. The deadline is Wednesday, January 15, 2020. Go to
region10.weac.org
and click on the Forms tab. Let's fill all the delegate positions for both the WEAC (47) and NEA (13) RAs. Lately there has not been enough delegates to fill our allocation for the WEAC RA.
Secondly, please consider signing up for our winter meeting. Information was sent out in December.
I'm including it again
. It will help us plan for snacks, and will help the instructors prepare and have enough materials on hand.

How RMD Changes Under THE SECURE ACT Impact Retirement Accounts
Summary:
Last month, the Setting Every Community Up For Retirement Enhancement (SECURE) Act was passed into law, creating the most substantial updates to the laws governing retirement accounts since the Pension Protection Act in 2006. One notable change resulting from the SECURE Act will be the increase in age at which Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) must begin. Prior to the SECURE Act, individuals with IRA accounts or qualified employer-sponsored retirement plans were required to take RMDs beginning in the year in which they turned 70 ½ with a deadline (for the first RMD only) of April 1 of the following year.
Beginning in 2020, however, the new age at which RMDs must start is age 72 (also with a deadline of April 1 of the following year). Notably, RMDs for individuals who turned 70 1/2 in 2019 are
not
delayed, and instead, such individuals must continue to take their RMDs under the same rules prior to passage of the SECURE Act. Despite the delay in the starting age for RMDs, though, Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) from IRAs will not be affected by the SECURE Act; accordingly, QCDs may still be taken from IRAs as early as age 70 1/2.
While the same life expectancy factors will continue to be used with no change under the SECURE Act, the IRS has recently (and separately) proposed to update the current life expectancy tables to adjust for longer expected lifespans. The IRS proposal has not yet been finalized, but is largely expected to be effective for RMDs calculated for 2021, and beyond...

Hi All,
I went to the gym this morning. It should be a priority - I should plan my day/week/month by FIRST plugging in gym time. A little yoga, plenty of steps, some cardio -- I know everything about the rest of the day/week/month will be better if I do this. My gym membership is most valuable
when I use it
!
And so is my union membership (yes, I too, am a member of a union!). It's best when I use it. My union membership is NOT a pop machine. I don't just put the money in and push a button and get what I want out of it. I have to work at my union membership to get the most value.
When you and your fellow members of your Local union work together to combat issues at your school, when you take collective action to make the changes you need to benefit the students you serve -- that's when you union membership works the best!
Peace,
Kathy Rohde
