Want an Airplane? Ask Nicely!

The Summer Issue of Jetrader includes a recap of the ISTAT Americas conference, held in Austin 3-5 March 2024. One of the most popular panels held during the event was titled “Want an Airplane? Ask Nicely!” Also known as the Lessor CEO Panel, this year’s panel was moderated by Douglas Runte and included Thomas Baker, chief executive officer and president of Aviation Capital Group; Michael Inglese, chief executive officer of Aircastle Limited; James Meyler, chief executive officer of ORIX Aviation Group; and Steven Townend, chief executive officer and managing director of BOC Aviation.

In the discussion, Baker underscored the structural constraints driving up lease rates and empowering lessors with pricing control. He emphasized the critical need for transparency from OEMs regarding delivery schedules, lamenting the challenges posed by uncertain timelines. “We want OEMs to tell us what they can actually do. We need to plan,” Baker said. “Our inability to know when the schedule delivery date will turn into, we’re getting schedule revisions repeatedly, it makes it hard for us to deliver to our customers and plan for our own future. Give us an honest assessment, and then let’s all this work in that direction.”
