“As they led Jesus away, a man named Simon, who was from Cyrene, happened to be coming in from the countryside. The soldiers seized him and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus."
Luke 23:26 NLT
"TAP-TAP-TAP"
In this sermon, Dr. Rosser is charging us to evaluate our commitment to discipleship. Ask yourself:
- How serious am I about serving God?
- How serious am I about doing the works of God?
- How serious am I about becoming a disciple?
In this verse, Simon would be the last person to minister to Jesus before the crucifixion. Simon did not know that on his travels that day that he would end up serving Jesus before He laid down His life for all of creation. Dr. Rosser points out a few things about ministry in his teaching on this subject.
1. Ministry is Unplanned
- Simon was headed to Jerusalem for the Passover, as most Jews were doing then. He did not anticipate being intercepted by the Roman soldiers to carry the cross for Jesus.
- Sometimes, God calls us to the things of Christ as an opportunity for God to be seen in His Glory.
- Ministry needs are unplanned and cannot be confined to a particular schedule.
2. Ministry is Unexpected
-
In the physical eye - It appeared as if the Roman soldiers were punishing Simon for not being Roman, but through the Spiritual eye, it can be perceived that the Master had need of Simon, just as He may be in need of you.
- Being tapped by man can mean being trusted by God.
- God appoints and anoints people to do the work of ministry and will equip them to move forward toward the calling.
- Let go and let God use you.
3. Ministry is Unwavering
- We must continue to follow the example Jesus provided for us.
- When Jesus was on the way, he was learning in the temples and synagogues.
- Following Jesus is another opportunity to glorify God.
- Following Jesus requires us to focus on the goal of salvation for everyone.
Dr. Rosser reminds us to stop following "folk" and follow Jesus. We must place our focus on Jesus. When we are focused on Christ, we are not aware of our distractions, and we are not thrown off our schedule because we have placed our focus on the ministry - one person at a time. Therefore, remember, if you deny the tap of Jesus, Jesus might deny you.
