Have you heard about the Chisago County Child Care Coalition?

As child care has become an important economic development issue the Chisago County HRA-EDA was approached by the Initiative Foundation to begin working toward solutions to aid this crisis. After a child care study was completed, Chisago County showed to have a large deficit in child care and the HRA-EDA pulled together partners to create the Chisago County Child Care Coalition. This coalition was established to create goals to focus on resolving the childcare needs in the county.

As of today here are a few tasks the coalition has completed:

  • Research and Complete Child Care Supply and Demand Gap Survey to determine and set goals
  • QuickBooks Training Course followed by a grant to cover QuickBooks 3-month subscription
  • Child Care Appreciation Month – Caribou gift cards to all licensed providers
  • Emergency Backpacks w/ flashlight-radio, multitool, a book and an extensive first-aid kit for all in-home providers
  • Mentor (providers that have volunteered to be involved in coalition) expenses to assist other county providers
  • Created grants to increase slots in Chisago County:
  1. Home start-up Grant
  2. Center Assistance Grant (expand, repurpose, upgrade)
  3. Architecture Grant (explore if expansion is feasible)
  4. School Funding to increase availability
  5. Existing Provider Grant (expand, hire staff, hardship)
  6. Technology Grant (purchase needed technology for business purposes)
  7. Raise awareness and educate the public on the child care need.

Please pass along this information to anyone interested in the topic or considering starting their own child care business.

Highway 8 is Transforming: We're Ready for the Big Changes Ahead!

In 2021, Chisago County received funding from multiple sources to assist with a major reconstruction project for Highway 8. This project aims to improve safety and mobility along eight miles of Highway 8 from Interstate 35 (I-35) in the west to Karmel Avenue in Chisago City in the east.

The HRA-EDA formed a project team and HKGI facilitated meetings to create the Highway 8 Strategic Framework. This Framework will guide future development, as well as public and private investment along the entire corridor in Chisago County. The framework process included evaluating how proposed and potential highway improvements will impact or support future retail, industrial, and residential development. The Strategic Framework is also intended to promote collaboration among the corridor communities and demonstrate the corridor-wide support for highway improvements.
