The HRA-EDA joined forces with school districts, communities, and manufacturing businesses to construct an event to offer high school students an opportunity to engage and learn about career opportunities in the diverse manufacturing industry. Many are not aware that the manufacturing industry offers a variety of job options including assembly, engineering, machining, technology, administrative and purchasing. For this reason, the HRA-EDA takes the event very seriously and hopes it will inspire other manufacturers and communities to embrace the collaboration and educational opportunities near by.
The event was held on October 9th, at Split Rocks Event Center in the City of Wyoming. The day begins and ends with onsite tours of local manufacturing facilities where the students get an in-person and hands-on experience of the working environment within the industry. About midday the students arrive at the event center where they are greeted by the Chisago County HRA-EDA, community partners and many manufacturing business representatives from throughout the county. During this event, the businesses have been directed to provide hands-on or interactive activities for the students creating an engaging experience that will peak their interest. The businesses take full advantage of the students visiting their booth by explaining what they do and how they operate. They also disclose employment opportunities with associated salaries to entice students to consider a career in manufacturing. These engaging conversations are important as the student can leave for the day with a goal in mind and begin planning their future education needs to obtain it. This event also hosted a business panel presentation and an educational gameshow to reinforce why manufacturing is a good career option, its training requirements, and wage expectations - watch for more on this in next weeks (edition #3) manufacturing month newsletter.
