DALLAS AFTERSCHOOL NEWS
Advocating for Afterschool
The City of Dallas is voting on its final budget this week and we want to keep you informed on amendments that affect afterschool programs. We are in favor of the following two amendments:

  • Allocate $975,000 from the General Fund to support the All Youth Access Pass. This provides critical scholarships and passes to allow low-income youth to benefit from cultural programming and activities. The Access Pass is an existing priority for the Department of Park & Recreation.

  • Allocate $500,000 from the General Fund for afterschool and summer programs directed by the Department of Park & Recreation. These programs currently serve more than 3,000 low-income students through Out-of-School-Time (OST) programming.
Additionally, we are opposed to the following amendment:

  • Eliminate $1.3 million from the budget of the Office of Community Care. This funding is vital for working families, as it provides critical social services including senior and youth programming, food support, and housing services which address drivers of poverty in our city.

The final city budget vote is tomorrow, September 18th. Let your city council representative know that you support afterschool!
A MESSAGE FROM OUR CEO
Christina K. Hanger
Dallas Afterschool is grateful to once again participate in North Texas Giving Day. This one day can truly make a lifetime of difference to students in our community.

Afterschool programs are in short supply in neighborhoods where they are needed most. Despite our advocacy efforts, in Dallas County there are still only enough free or low-cost afterschool programs to serve 17% of students in need.

You can help us change this statistic! Please, visit our North Texas Giving Day page and give on September 19th.

Thank you for believing in the difference afterschool makes in our community!
