Planning for Summer Literacy Gains
Dallas Afterschool is Gearing up to Impact More Students over the Summer
After four successful years of partnering to make the Tackle Summer Slide (TSS) program possible, Dallas Afterschool is preparing for yet another successful year. And, thanks to some additional funding, we are expanding our summer literacy efforts to impact even more students! Over 1,500 more students will now have the opportunity to increase literacy skills this summer, instead of experiencing the typical two months of learning loss. This will more than double the number of students served!

Over the past two years, about 1,000 students were collectively impacted through TSS. Out of these, 70% did not experience summer learning loss. Even better, over 50% of students gained two months of literacy! With a track record like this, we can't wait to share our results at the end of the summer.
New Funding for Out-of-School Time
Dallas Afterschool worked with over 200 citizens and organizations to send comments and letters to the City of Dallas' Community Development Commission. The request? For more afterschool and summer programs to be made available through the Community Development Block Grant.

The results? Our efforts were a huge success! 42% of the comments were for additional funds to out-of-school time services. T he commission voted in March to recommend that the City Council allocate an additional $300,000 to out-of-school time activities. This June, City Council will vote to approve this recommendation.

As the school year draws to a close, out-of-school time providers are busy working to ensure they can keep children engaged over the summer. As you can imagine, it is no different for Dallas Afterschool. Our team is hard at work planning and coordinating expanded literacy programming to ensure all students in Dallas have the opportunity to continue their academic progress over the summer. This is a huge effort, but it is also a big part of why Dallas Afterschool exists. Our work helps afterschool and summer programs have more impactful programming with higher quality. By working together , we are able to make a bigger impact on children in our community.

Thank you for your commitment to high quality out-of-school time programming! We appreciate your continued support.
Having Fun While Making a Lasting Impact
Earlier this month, our Young Professionals Group (YPG) hosted a happy hour at HG Supply Co. We had a great time networking and discussing plans for upcoming months (including ideas for a future YPG fundraiser!).
Want to make a difference to students in Dallas while making new friends? YPG helps support Dallas Afterschool and its mission through fundraising, volunteering, and awareness.
Volunteers Helped Inspire Heart House Students
Thank you to our longtime friends and volunteers at Baird! The group recently visited our partners at Heart House to give back by helping students with the Marble Art Madness Wonder Kit. This creative activity was a much-needed break from STAR testing for students. Thank you, Baird, for all you do!
