Expanded Learning Opportunities (ELO) Awareness Day
On January 15th our staff visited the Texas State Capitol as part of Expanded Learning Opportunities (ELO) Awareness Day. We met with legislators to discuss the importance of afterschool and summer learning. We also shared our policy brief with recommendations at the state, local, and school board level to advocate for afterschool. Special thanks to our friends at Texas Partnership for Out of School Time for organizing this visit!

It's February, which means our seventh annual RECESS! event is just around the corner. RECESS! is always a great time, but this year's event means so much more. Why, you ask? Because in addition to raising funds for afterschool quality and expansion, we will be honoring the amazing Susan Hoff.

Susan is a longtime friend of Dallas Afterschool, a Dallas education advocate, a local philanthropist and a change maker for good. We are delighted to honor her for all her great work in the Dallas community.

Tag...you're it! I'll see you "on the playground" next month!
Your Voice Can Bring Positive Change

The City of Dallas recently released its five year funding plan, which includes recommendations for afterschool program funding. Now more than ever, it is important to express the value and need for Out-of-School-Time programs in our community.

How can you help? Please complete the City of Dallas HUD Five-Year Consolidated Plan Community Survey and show your support for afterschool funding.

Note: Funding for afterschool programming is based on the city's recommendations for additional Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds.

Students Build Cell Towers as Future Engineers
Last year, T-Mobile contacted Dallas Afterschool in search of a meaningful way to engage students in its local service area. Enter the Wonder Kit.

Wonder Kits are a staple of Dallas Afterschool partners. These STEM-based activities in a box inspire curiosity in students as they explore a variety of topics. T-Mobile sponsored the development of a new Wonder Kit and assisted us in its development.

Dallas Afterschool recently piloted the new Wonder Kit at ED Walker Middle School. This challenge-based kit encourages students to think like engineers, building cell towers using limited resources and a unique set of guidelines based on their assigned territory. The verdict? Our new T-Mobile Wonder Kit is a hit! Special thanks to our partners at After-School All-Stars for hosting us.
