Welcome David Moses
Marketing Agency Auditor
David Moses, Marketing Agency Auditor, recently joined the Marketing and Business Development department. David assists with coordinating and conducting agency/broker audits and reviews them in accordance with external regulatory requirements. He assists in the management and maintenance of the agency/broker business plan function in coordination with underwriting and marketing requirements.

Prior to accepting this new position, David was a Safety Management Associate Consultant in the Safety Services department at Chesapeake Employers.

David possesses a bachelor's degree in business management from the University of Baltimore, Merrick School of Business.

First aid and CPR/AED training is available for employees of  Chesapeake Employers' policyholders. All classes will be held at Chesapeake Employers in Towson from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. There is a nominal charge per person to cover the cost of training manuals.

ABC & Chesapeake Employers Celebrate 20-Year Partnership in 2017

ABC program discount increases to 8.5 percent
 
The Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. (ABC) and Chesapeake Employers are celebrating their 20-year partnership in 2017.
ABC 20 Years

"With each passing year, our partnership with ABC has expanded and grown stronger," says Sharon Rowell, Chief Administrative Officer. "Now, we're celebrating 20 years together, side-by-side for safety and savings."

ABC President Mike Henderson, says: "From the very beginning, this program has been a great marriage between our members, the agent community, and a carrier that has a long and abiding commitment to the industry and the state. We are very grateful to Chesapeake Employers, President and CEO Tom Phelan, and his team for all they have done for the commercial builder in Maryland."

"The company's 20-year partnership with ABC is founded upon the common goal of keeping Maryland workers safe," explains Kyle Menendez, Programs and Research Supervisor for Chesapeake Employers. "ABC's outstanding commitment to workplace safety has allowed this partnership to flourish with rate discounts and superior policyholder services that attract over 250 Maryland businesses into the ABC Comp Advantage Safety Group Program."

Through this program, eligible members can receive a discount off of Chesapeake Employers' base rates. Effective April 1, 2017, the discount will increase from 7.5 percent to 8.5 percent.

Mike Barton, Chesapeake Employers Safety Management Consultant and ABC Safety Director, says:  "I've been a part of this partnership for 13 years now, and it's been a wonderful journey. I've had the opportunity to help many area contractors fulfill their needs for safety training and help them with compliance. It's been a very rewarding experience."

*ABC members who are part of the ABC program are members of the ABC Baltimore Metro, ABC Chesapeake Shores, ABC Cumberland Valley and ABC Metro Washington Chapters.

Tom Phelan Hosts Agent Town Hall Meetings Around Maryland
Tom Phelan President and CEO Tom Phelan held three Agent Town Hall meetings around Maryland in February and March. Agents received news about a variety of important issues affecting Chesapeake Employers now and in the future.

At the Town Hall meetings an overview was provided on the following topics:
  • Update on joining NCCI;
  • Chesapeake's core system replacement;
  • Other States Coverage expansion;
  • Continued emphasis on medical treatment and claims management;
  • Future dividends to policyholders.
2017 Overall Base Rates Decrease 5 Percent

The 2017 rates will experience an overall net rate decrease of 5 percent, effective April 1, 2017.

 

Several classifications will receive rate cuts greater than or equal to 10 percent. Individually, 425 of the 555 base rates experienced a decrease. Please refer to Producer Bulletin MK 17 01 dated February 2017 for details about rates and information concerning:

  • Class code changes and exceptions;
  • Data mining pricing tiers;
  • Non-data mining pricing tiers;
  • ABC premium discount plan and rate discount;
  • 2017 experience rating plan;
  • New calculation of policy minimum premiums;
  • Revised payroll limitations.

Agency Audits are Underway
Chesapeake Employers is conducting agency audits to verify compliance with the company's Producer Agreement, fraud prevention plan, and Maryland law. All agencies will be subject to audits once every five years by the Marketing Agency Auditor and/or by the Territorial Account Executives.

If your agency is scheduled to be audited, you will be notified in advance and instructed on how to prepare for the audit. Workers' Comp Seminars Help Your Clients Control Costs

Chesapeake Employers will host four workers' compensation insurance seminars for policyholders and business owners in 2017. The preliminary agenda includes:

  • Overview of employment laws;
  • Top 3 types of workplace injuries and how to prevent them;
  • Preparing for a premium audit;
  • Claims management and health services;
  • Mock Workers' Compensation Commission hearing.

Corey Grunert, Chesapeake Win Awards from Maryland Hispanic Chamber of Commerce
The Maryland Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (MDHCC) awarded Corey Grunert, Chesapeake Employers' Marketing Associate, the "Rising Star of the Year" award for her ability to demonstrate leadership, ethics, business savvy, and community service on behalf of the Chamber's members. Corey accepted the award at the Chamber's annual Business Awards Holiday Gala held at Martin's East in Baltimore on January 12, 2017.

The chamber also awarded Chesapeake Employers the "Outstanding Business of the Year" award for its support and commitment to the Chamber and its members. Kyle Menendez, Chesapeake Employers' Programs and Research Supervisor, accepted the award on behalf of the company.
