Dear Shawnee UMC Family,

Please join us for Worship

this Sunday

in-person or on Facebook Live at 10:30am.

The Scripture for Pastor Changsu's message will be:

2 Corinthians 3: 1- 3

Are we beginning to commend ourselves again? Surely we do not need, as some do, letters of recommendation to you or from you, do we? 2 You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, to be known and read by all; 3 and you show that you are a letter of Christ, prepared by us, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.

The Tuesday Lectionary Group invites you to share some of your favorite scriptures, which we will then share with all members.

Please email them to:

maryann13fenstermacher@gmail.com.

Here are this week's scriptures for study and meditation:

Psalm 33:18-22 But look here: the Lord's eyes watch all who honor him, all who wait for his faithful love, to deliver their lives from death and to keep them alive during a famine. We put our hope in the Lord. He is our help and our shield. Our heart rejoices in God because we trust in his holy name. Lord, let your faithful love surround us because we wait for you.

1 Kings 17:12-16 "As surely as the Lord your God lives," she replied, "I don't have any food; only a handful of flour in a jar and a bit of oil in a bottle. Look at me. I'm collecting two sticks so that I can make some food for myself and my son. We'll eat the last of the food and then die." Elijah said to her, "Don't be afraid! Go and do what you said. Only make a little loaf of bread for me first. Then bring it to me. You can make something for yourself and your son after that. This is what Israel's God, the Lord, says: The jar of flour won't decrease and the bottle of oil won't run out until the day the Lord sends rain on the earth." The widow went and did what Elijah said. So the widow, Elijah, and the widow's household ate for many days. The jar of flour didn't decrease nor did the bottle of oil run out, just as the Lord spoke through Elijah.

James 5:7-11 Therefore, brothers and sisters, you must be patient as you wait for the coming of the Lord. Consider the farmer who waits patiently for the coming of rain in the fall and spring, looking forward to the precious fruit of the earth. You also must wait patiently, strengthening your resolve, because the coming of the Lord is near. Don't complain about each other, brothers and sisters, so that you won't be judged. Look! The judge is standing at the door! Brothers and sisters, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord as an example of patient resolve and steadfastness. Look at how we honor those who practiced endurance. You have heard of the endurance of Job. And you have seen what the Lord has accomplished, for the Lord is full of compassion and mercy.

Mark 16:14-20 Finally he appeared to the eleven while they were eating. Jesus criticized their unbelief and stubbornness because they didn't believe those who saw him after he was raised up. He said to them, "Go into the whole world and proclaim the good news to every creature. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever doesn't believe will be condemned. These signs will be associated with those who believe: They will throw out demons in my name. They will speak in new languages. They will pick up snakes with their hands. If they drink anything poisonous, it will not hurt them. They will place their hands on the sick, and they will get well." After the Lord Jesus spoke to them, he was lifted up into heaven and sat down on the right side of God. But they went out and proclaimed the message everywhere. The Lord worked with them, confirming the word by the signs associated with them.

Volunteers Needed at the Patch

This is our 13th year for the SUMC Pumpkin Patch!

It’s a very visible outreach SUMC does with the community and now that downtown Shawnee becoming more active it’s a perfect fit.

All this could not have happened without generous volunteers taking their time to organize, operate, and meet with our neighbors. It’s fun and easy with many different ways to participate.

  • First of all - check your calendars during the Month of October and schedule to work a shift! Or even one shift a week! It’s easy work. The patch is open from 10AM to 7PM every day in October with the day divided into 3 shifts. The on-line sign-up genius will be up soon. So plan ahead, pick a date and invite a friend to work a shift together.

  • There are many other opportunities to get more involved. The Pumpkin Patch Committee is looking for some “assistants” to work alongside the different positions that make the patch run even more smoothly. If your good with organizing, party planning, finances, stuffing kids bags, or just jack of all trades there is something you can help with at the patch!

If you spot something that intrigues you, just give me a call. All volunteers welcome & appreciated!

United Women in Faith will have a Book Sale on October 13th and 14th.

Save your books for the sale and bring them any time to the church library, notated for the book sale.

We can also pick your books up if you would like. Call Susan Ozga at 913-271-0385 for pickup or questions.

This sale will help in our mission work in our community and UWIF district pledge.

A Bake Sale is being held with the Book Sale.

You can start bringing your baked goods on October 12th in the afternoon. Please mark your goods as to what it is and if it has nuts.

Thanks for your help.

Any questions, call Sandy Daley at (913) 831-1226.
