Gambling Addiction Expert Visits Campus

Harry Levant, director of gambling policy with the Public Health Advocacy Institute (PHAI) at Northeastern University, spent the entire day of Dec. 1 at Thayer to help students, faculty, staff, and parents/guardians understand the risks of youth gambling and to strengthen the collective capacity for early prevention and harm reduction. Levant, himself a gambling addict in recovery who holds a master’s degree in professional clinical counseling from La Salle University and a law degree from Temple University School of Law, addressed Upper School students in a morning assembly, offered grade-level presentations throughout the day in the Middle School, and offered remarks to families that night in the CFA’s Hale Theater. Members of the Thayer community are encouraged to donate warm winter coats — for both children and adults — from now until Friday, Dec. 19. All sizes are welcome, but please donate coats only. Longtime drive partner Anton’s Cleaners will clean the garments, so they just need to be in wearable condition. Drop-off boxes are located by the front door of the Middle School as well as in the Student Commons.

Join the “Calling In” Book Club

Be part of a school-wide conversation ahead of Loretta J. Ross’ Feb. 26 Global Speaker Series visit and the Tiger Unity Summit. The book club will explore Calling In: How to Start Making Change with Those You'd Rather Cancel, a powerful guide to empathy and justice by Ross, an activist and educator. The book club kicked things off Dec. 1; follow-up discussions are slated for Thursday, Jan. 8, and Thursday, Feb. 5. Again, the author visit and Global Speaker Series event will take place Feb. 26. All are welcome; to sign up, click here

‘Beyond the Blueprint’ Is Current Gallery Exhibit

“Beyond the Blueprint: Architects as Artists” is currently on display in Koskores Gallery; the exhibit will run until Friday, Dec. 19. An in-school reception will take place Tuesday, Dec. 9, from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m.

This group exhibition honors practitioners and educators who navigate between the structural and the expressive, bringing architectural sensibilities into the realm of fine art. The work of these local artists, all with a background in architecture, demonstrates how design thinking transforms and enriches artistic practice. This exhibit reflects deep appreciation for the innovative perspective they all bring to their field. (PHOTO: Along Trapelo, 2024 by Mark Jarzombek)

Marilyn Legg Holiday Gift Drive

The 38th annual Marilyn Legg Holiday Gift Drive is underway. Upper School students heard a presentation Nov. 17 announcing the gift drive; students then had the opportunity to take a notecard with a child's name and gift wish on it. Parents and guardians, please check in with your child to see if they did take a notecard, which is a commitment to buy a gift for a child. In most cases this will be the only gift that this child receives this holiday season, and gift drive organizers want to make sure no one is left out. The toys should be dropped off, unwrapped, by Dec. 10 (the earlier the better) in the Hale Learning Center, which is located in Glover Building.

The Middle School received the Marilyn Legg Holiday Gift Drive presentation right after Thanksgiving Break; Middle School students now also have the opportunity to sign up for a notecard with a specific gift for a child in need.

The drive’s goal is to provide gifts for more than 600 local children. The organizations that this drive benefits are: Department of Child and Family Services; South Boston Neighborhood House; and Quincy Headstart. If you have any questions or would like to make a donation to support this drive, please reach out to Ms. Dunne or Mr. Schneider. Also, if students have lost their notecards, they can always contact either faculty member for the information. Drive organizers thank the Thayer community for its generosity and wish everyone a wonderful Thanksgiving Break.
