All-School Announcements

‘Windchill Factor’ at Koskores Gallery

The exhibit “Windchill Factor” is currently on display at Koskores Gallery and will continue until Friday, April 17. An in-school reception for students, faculty, and staff will be held Tuesday, April 7, from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. In addition, there will be a public reception Saturday, April 11; at that event, there will be an all-levels yoga experience from 3 to 3:45 p.m. with the actual reception following from 3:45 to 5:30 p.m.

Windchill, the phenomenon where the perceived temperature drops significantly due to the wind, is a powerful metaphor for broader social and environmental challenges. The windchill amplifies the effects of cold weather and societal inequities. The artists of NAWA-MA (National Association of Women Artists, Massachusetts) engage with themes of awareness, adaptation, stability, instability, and the interconnectedness of all beings. This timely multimedia exhibition consists of drawings, paintings, sculptures, and installations that address women's unique experiences and perspectives and the obstacles they have had to overcome throughout history, highlighting that women are potent collaborators with the foresight to facilitate the environmental and social change necessary for a healthy future.

Music Concerts Are April 9 & April 14

The spring music concerts will take place Thursday, April 9, and Tuesday, April 14. Both concerts will take place at 7 p.m. in the CFA’s Hale Theater. As always, these concerts are free and open to all.

The April 9 concert (Concert III) will feature the Jazz Ensemble, the Chamber Orchestra, and the Castleman Orchestra. The April 14 concert (Concert IV) will feature Mr. Skop’s and Mr. Browne’s rock ensembles.

Pener Conference Is April 13; Link To Sign Up for Workshops

The James Tufts Pener Environmental Stewardship Conference will take place Monday, April 13, in the CFA. Thayer is hosting this amazing conference for the fourth year, and more than 20 different schools have been invited to attend the all-day event. The keynote address will be delivered by Pete Malinowski of the Billion Oyster Project, a fascinating initiative to help clean the water of New York Harbor. There will also be nine student presentations about particular areas of interest as well as seven hands-on workshops for student attendees to take part in. All juniors and seniors will attend the keynote address, but the conference is open to all Upper School students. To view the day’s schedule, click here. To sign up for a workshop, click here

After the conference organizers will share videos of the presentations for everyone to see.

Mahjong Fundraiser Is April 14

The Mahjong Club will hold its “Mahjong for a Cause” fundraiser Tuesday, April 14, from 5 to 7 p.m. in Southworth Library. The fundraiser benefits Wellspring, an organization that gives support and skills to families who are dealing with challenges. All skill levels are welcome. There will be competitive tables with prizes for winners as well as guided gameplay for those who are less familiar. The night will feature both American and Traditional Mahjong. Suggested minimum donation is $5. Individuals can RSVP by clicking here or by reaching out to Upper School Math & Computer Science Faculty Leeanne Dillman for more details.

Senior Service Trip to Peru; Donations Sought

On May 20 a brave group of 13 seniors will travel to Cusco, Peru. This is the 18th year that Thayer students will participate in this trip. During its time in-country, the group will work with children in Aldea SOS and Aldea Juan Pablo II. The students will also visit various schools in the city as well as spend time in Huilloc Alto — a remote indigenous village in the Sacred Valley.

Trip organizers ask the Thayer community to donate the following items for this amazing trip:

  • Board games (with all the pieces)
  • School supplies (both new and gently used)
  • Art supplies (new and gently used)
  • Soccer and volleyballs (new or used) and ball pumps
  • Warm (not summer) clothing for newborns through age16 (male and female).

Finally, if anyone has old iPhones, laptops, or tablets (with charging cords), organizers would be grateful for these donations as well. The orphanages and schools that these seniors visit are always incredibly grateful for whatever technology that the students can provide.

Donations can be placed in bins located in Cahall, in the Brickyard, and on the second floor of Main Building (outside Main 208). Please direct any questions to Upper School World Languages Faculty Terri Lukens P ’24, ’27. Donations will be accepted through Friday, May 1.

Thayer’s guest will be here April 13–21, and Thayer already has a wonderful group of student hosts who can support you with planning and questions throughout the experience. Interested? A Hyannis native, Sherman is a best-selling author, investigative journalist, and true-crime writer as well as an EMMY-nominated television producer. He is the author of several books including The Finest Hours, which chronicles the Coast Guard’s daring 1952 rescue attempt of the SS Pendleton off Cape Cod, and Boston Strong: A City’s Triumph Over Tragedy, which is widely considered the definitive account of the terrorist bombings at the 2013 Boston Marathon. His latest books, Helltown and Blood in the Water, both local true-crime stories, were instant best-sellers.

Established in 2016 through the generous support of Amelia and Todd Slawsby ’88, the Bailey-King Author Series celebrates the written word through annual author events at Thayer. The series is named in honor of longtime English faculty members Betty Bailey ’63 and Jim King P ’01, ’04, ’06.
