'An Evening With Charlie Castleman ’57' Is March 30

Thayer’s Global Speaker Series continues with “An Evening With Charlie Castleman ’57” on Monday, March 30, at 6:30 p.m. in the CFA’s Hale Theater.

Castleman is a world-renowned violinist and former professor at the Eastman School of Music; he is currently a faculty member at the Frost School of Music, University of Miami. He will perform both as a soloist and alongside the Atlantic Symphony Orchestra, which is conducted by its music director, Jin Kim P ’27, a current Scholar in Residence at Thayer. The Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel has honored Castleman’s career by producing a documentary, which will be shown that night; there will also be a Q&A session.

‘Windchill Factor’ at Koskores Gallery

The exhibit “Windchill Factor” is currently on display at Koskores Gallery and will continue until Friday, April 17. An in-school reception for students, faculty, and staff will be held Tuesday, April 7, from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. In addition, there will be a public reception Saturday, April 11; at that event, there will be an all-levels yoga experience from 3 to 3:45 p.m. with the actual reception following from 3:45 to 5:30 p.m.

Windchill, the phenomenon where the perceived temperature drops significantly due to the wind, is a powerful metaphor for broader social and environmental challenges. The windchill amplifies the effects of cold weather and societal inequities. The artists of NAWA-MA (National Association of Women Artists, Massachusetts) engage with themes of awareness, adaptation, stability, instability, and the interconnectedness of all beings. This timely multimedia exhibition consists of drawings, paintings, sculptures, and installations that address women's unique experiences and perspectives and the obstacles they have had to overcome throughout history, highlighting that women are potent collaborators with the foresight to facilitate the environmental and social change necessary for a healthy future.

Pener Conference Is April 13

The fourth annual James Tufts Pener Environmental Stewardship Conference will take place Monday, April 13, on campus. The conference celebrates the spirit and legacy of James Tufts Pener ’23, who tragically lost his life just before his senior year at Thayer. In keeping with Pener’s passion for the environment and sustainability, the conference focuses on what students can do about the important issues facing the environment.

Pete Malinowski, co-founder and CEO of the Billion Oyster Project out of New York City, will be this year’s keynote speaker. Conference organizers have reached out to all of Thayer’s Upper School students in addition to inviting students from 24 surrounding private and public high schools to attend, give a presentation, or lead a workshop.

If you have any questions, please reach out to Upper School Science Faculty Skip Schneider P ’20, ’22

Wily Network Care Package Event for Sophomores

Attention, parents and guardians of sophomores: This year Thayer's sophomore class, through their Common Good program, is partnering with the Wily Network, and TAPA is working in coordination with Director of Global Engagement Kim Gilmore and Dean of Students Kristan Gately P ’28 to make this happen.

The Wily Network is a local nonprofit organization that supports Wily Scholars, college students who are working toward their degrees without emotional or financial support from family. Wily Scholars are navigating life and their education on their own.

How will the program work?

Wily has asked Thayer to "adopt" 40 scholars and provide each of them with care packages in April to help support them during spring final exams. These care packages are for Wily Scholars who attend MIT (31 scholars), BC (eight scholars), and Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (one scholar). Those parents and guardians with older kids already in college know how much college students appreciate receiving something from home. Since Wily Scholars do not currently have a stable family support system, these care packages mean a great deal to them.

How can you help?

TAPA asks those interested to consider donating items for the care packages. Organizers have created a SignUpGenius so that they're aware of what's being purchased. Please bring all items to Thayer and leave in the collection bins in Ms. Gately's office in the Student Commons. Students will then assemble the care packages. All donations should be delivered by Wednesday, April 1.

Families with questions can contact Ms. Gilmore or TAPA Vice President Rebecca Baker P ’28.

Mahjong Meetups

Interested in learning to play mahjong or just practicing your mahjong skills? Join Upper School Math & Computer Science Faculty Leeanne Dillmann and your fellow parents/guardians on the second Monday of each month from 6 to 8 p.m. in Southworth Library.

Meetups will be held on the following dates:

  • Monday, April 13
  • Monday, May 11

Beginners are welcome. Contact Ms. Dillmann with questions.

End-Of-Term Celebration Is April 1

A reminder: The Middle School End-of-Term Celebration will take place Wednesday, April 1, from 8:05 to 9 a.m. in the CFA’s Hale Theater.

A Conversation on Motivating Students

This spring the Middle School invites parents and guardians into a conversation inspired by the Middle School faculty’s study of the book The Disengaged Teen: Helping Kids Learn Better, Feel Better, and Live Better by Jenny Anderson and Rebecca Winthrop. Organizers will share additional information on how to join the conversation — whether by reading the book, listening to a podcast, or simply showing up; there’s no expectation to read the book in order to participate. All are welcome.

The first event in the discussion will take place Wednesday, April 22, from 8:15 to 9:15 a.m. in the Bakker Reading Room of Southworth Library. Middle School families can expect an email next week with detailed information and an RSVP link.

Science Cafe Is March 31

The next Middle School Science Cafe will take place Tuesday, March 31, with a naturalist/educator from the Blue Hills Trailside Museum who will bring an owl. Interested Middle School students should sign up and submit questions for the presenter via Google Form. This is always a very popular science cafe — and space is limited — so be sure to sign up early. Students will be able to eat lunch together in the science room while meeting with the presenter. Those with questions can contact Middle School Science Department Head Natalie Young.
