New Century Careers Update
November at NCC: A month of progress amid COVID
Despite the challenge of pandemic guidelines, New Century Careers progress continues as noted in the stories below. The pressing need for production of critical supplies and unprecedented levels of unemployment make NCC’s industry-driven MANUFACTURING 2000 (M2K) Registered Pre-Apprenticeship program more critical than ever. This short-term program offers metalworking training and employment assistance at no cost to a diverse, inclusive group of trainees residing in Southwestern Pennsylvania, from high school graduates to those who are unemployed, underemployed or experiencing barriers to employment. (See story below.) Be a part of the recovery of the region’s manufacturing sector through training for family-wage job opportunities for all interested candidates. Click on Gving Tuesday link below.

NCC chosen for Advanced Manufacturing Certification Program for Small Businesses Recovering from Pandemic
LIFT, the Detroit-based, Department of Defense-supported national manufacturing innovation institute, and part of the Manufacturing USA network, opened its “Operation Next” advanced manufacturing certification program to employees of Pittsburgh-area small and medium-sized manufacturers recovering from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Employers will be able to take advantage of performance-based training at New Century Careers and the Community College of Allegheny County. LIFT is partnering with Pittsburgh-based Catalyst Connection, a Pennsylvania Manufacturing Extension Partnership, to manage the program and connect manufacturers.

Give Camp Pittsburgh yields
fully supported online application
NCC’s project proposal -- an enhanced online application process for its Manufacturing 2000 (M2K) program -- was chosen for "Give Camp" Pittsburgh held Nov. 6-8. Give Camp convened volunteers to use their technical and creative skills to help local non-profit organizations reach their full potential.

The weekend resulted in a fully supported online application for the NCC website where prospective trainees, community based organizations and other referral partners can access the application directly, fill it out and submit it online. President and CEO Neil Ashbaugh, who attended the camp, said, “Now anyone can apply from anywhere. Thank you to all the volunteers at Give Camp for making this possible.” Once submitted, the completed application will be captured in Salesforce software streamlining the task for the applicant and minimizing staff time in processing the forms. Paper applications will still be accepted.
FISA Foundation grant to improve
digital accessibility
New Century Careers continues to seek innovative ways to reach a diverse pool of candidates for its free training programs. FISA Foundation recently awarded NCC a grant to review the NCC website to ensure that it is digitally accessible for all. For this project, NCC has engaged Bender Consulting Services, Inc., which offers disability employment expertise in recruitment, workplace mentoring, strategic planning, training, and digital accessibility.

Five trainees earn sought-after
NIMS credentials
Congratulations to these five NCC trainees, pictured with Neil Ashbaugh (left), who earned industry-recognized NIMS credentials. NIMS credentials are an important standard employers look for when hiring as proof that candidates “know what they know.” The credentials are portable from job to job, contributing to career advancement. NCC trainees can earn numerous NIMS credentials before they complete NCC training.

BotsIQ Continues to Promote
Manufacturing Careers and Skills
As schools shift between in-person and remote learning, BotsIQ continues to offer its quality programming and resources for students and teachers to build their technical knowledge and promote manufacturing and STEM-related careers.

Through BotsIQ Academy, students and teachers have access to industry classes from Tooling U-SME, SolidProfessor, and Mastercam University. BotsIQ’s virtual tours, career panels, and training sessions allow students to learn more about manufacturing companies in our region. In the BotsIQ Close the Loop program, high school students create individual career plans that align their skills and interests with career-related experiences, such as manufacturing tours, job shadowing, and internships.

“While our program’s delivery is different right now, BotsIQ is proud to continue its work of introducing students to manufacturing careers and skills,” said Michel Conklin, Executive Director of BotsIQ.

Hosting these events virtually has provided BotsIQ with an opportunity to share resources with schools it had not previously engaged. “Traditionally, we have partnered with high schools across the region, but with these events, BotsIQ had several elementary and middle schools participate too,” said Conklin. “I am excited that our events reached younger students and am hopeful these activities sparked an interest for them to consider a future in manufacturing.”
