Good Morning, Hope!
It’s highly unlikely you woke up this morning, splashed some water on your face, and thought of your baptism, right?
Oftentimes, I think we, as lifelong Christians, overlook how significant being washed in the waters of baptism truly is. At least for those of us who had that done in our early months of existence. Whether you were an infant, came to faith later, or have recently discovered faith and are intrigued about God’s promptings to be baptized, the New Testament understanding of baptism is more than a preparation for death or an assurance of heaven in the afterlife, like I was raised to understand.
As I entered my early 20s, read the New Testament and investigated my deep Lutheran roots, what I found was that baptism was not so much about waiting to cash in my “heaven insurance plan,” but a beginning that needed to be lived out in the world every day.
When I realized the significance of my baptism and new promises every day, I was overwhelmed by the radicalness of what God was offering. God is full of surprises. Coming in water, God washed me and grafted me into Christ. It assured my identity was set for the rest of my life. I, along with others welcomed in by the waters of baptism, are children of God, a holy nation, disciples of Christ, proclaimers of God’s words and deeds, sons and daughters, and part of the communion of saints.
In this day and age when things are constantly changing and fleeting because of things in my control and things not in my control, I can depend on God. That, through his baptismal promise to me, my freedom and hope is not dependent on…
- how I feel.
- having had the right experience.
- what I may or may not have accomplished.
- what success or position I was able to achieve.
Instead, I can lean on God and his faithfulness in all things.
This weekend I invite you to the waters of baptism. The cool, refreshing waters that bring eternal life and a new calling to everyday living. It will be awesome. Come and see.
