Greetings Alumni and Friends,
As Central State University enters its 136th year, many exciting developments are on the horizon.
In addition to our academic opportunities, student and alumni successes, and athletic victories, we are proud to announce the enhancement of our land-grant mission through the development of two new buildings – a research facility and a farm operations/storage facility. The project is funded entirely to date by funds from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the State of Ohio as part of the annual allocation of resources to support the University’s 1890 Land-Grant mission. These two buildings are the physical embodiment of our commitment to groundbreaking research and serving the surrounding community.
This February, we mourned the loss of Dr. Arthur E. Thomas, president emeritus and graduate of the class of 1962. Dr. Thomas will be greatly missed. His legacy lives on in those of us who had the pleasure of knowing him and the entire Central State community.
We hope to see you on campus on March 7 for Charter Day, as we celebrate 136 years of academic excellence.

Greetings Central State University Alumni and Friends,
Welcome to the first edition of The Ambassador, a Central State newsletter designed to share our story of education and impact with our friends and supporters. Each edition will feature crucial and inspiring updates from across the Central State community.
Our students, faculty, and alumni continue to receive recognition, conduct groundbreaking research, revitalize their communities, and enhance our University and its legacy. The Ambassador aims to highlight these achievements and foster an even greater sense of pride and warmth across the Central State community. At the same time, you can be one of the first to promote positive stories from around our campuses.
As the new vice president of Institutional Advancement and executive director of the Central State University Development Foundation, I lead a team that is prepared to uplift the University to revolutionize our support of students and alumni, embrace the bedrock of our past, and evolve systems to meet the changing needs of today’s students. With a robust background working with Historically Black Colleges and Universities, I have a longstanding passion for higher education as a conduit for community development, economic opportunity, social justice, and health equity. I’m proud to be a part of this network of changemakers poised to continue the work of educating and uplifting communities.

The Central State Lady Marauders defeated the Wilberforce University Bulldogs, 77-61, on February 14. Sophomore Kailyn Nash led the Marauders with 20 points and recorded her 16th multi-block game of the year.

DR. DERRICK L. FOWARD, '90, NAMED "ACTIVIST OF THE YEAR"
Dr. Derrick L. Foward, 1990 graduate and CSU Foundation board member, received the NAACP Image Award for "Activist of the Year" during the 54th NAACP Image Awards.

Penny, CSU’s certified comfort therapy dog, celebrated her 2nd birthday! As a comfort therapy dog, Penny provides comfort to people who are going through a traumatic incident or mental health crisis, struggling with stress or anxiety, or just need a lift in their day. She and her handler, Officer Jeremy Blum, visit the campus community, work closely with University Counseling Services, and attend community events. Officer Blum says Penny “loves treats, stuffed toys, chasing birds, and exploring outside.” |

THE UNIVERSITY IS NO STRONGER THAN ITS ALUMNI
Greetings Fellow Alumni,
Where would we be today without having the wonderful experience of a Central State University education as a valuable key to unlocking vast opportunities? Alumni who give back with their financial resources and time help support the next generation of students. When we give back to our alma mater, those funds go toward research, scholarships, and new facilities, among other things. It helps increase the stature of the University, making it a better place than when we graduated. Therefore, it is critical that we as proud and accomplished alumni support our alma mater unconditionally with a willingness to go the extra mile.
I look forward to fellowshipping with many of you during the 136th Charter Day Convocation on Tuesday, March 7, 2023, where we will celebrate the founding of our beloved Central State University and induct ten of our most accomplished alumni into the Achievement Hall of Fame.

First Baptist Church in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, donated $2,000 to Central State! Four alums, including Dr. Alvin Singh ’68, Barbara Singh ’67, and Joann Brannon ’64 (former Miss CSU), attended the service and met Pastor James McCarroll.

INVINCIBLE MARCHING MARAUDERS TAKE NEW ORLEANS

The Central State Invincible Marching Marauders traveled to New Orleans, Louisiana, on February 17 to perform at three Mardi Gras parades. On the way to New Orleans, the Marching Marauders had the opportunity to travel to Atlanta, Georgia, to hold auditions for graduating seniors at Tri-Cities High School. Also, the Dancing Belles got to speak to the current majorettes at the high school.

HONORING THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF DR. ARTHUR E. THOMAS, PRESIDENT EMERITUS
Dr. Arthur E. Thomas, President Emeritus of Central State University and alum of the Class of 1962, transitioned from this earth on February 9, 2023. The Thomas family extends a heartfelt invitation to you to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Arthur E. Thomas. Ceremonies will take place in Dayton, Ohio, and Wilberforce, Ohio.

A New Day in the College of Education | |
It's a new day in the College of Education!
Guided by the theme Progress – Accountability—Teamwork, the CoE created an organizational plan designed to build relationships, capacity, support, and educational pipelines. The outstanding faculty in the CoE completed the curriculum realignment needed to offer the new Primary (Pk-5) licensure degree program. Students started the Marauder Future Teachers Club CoE. The club aims to build collegial relationships, support student success, recruit education majors, and promote the teaching profession as a viable, rewarding career option.
Students also attended the Ohio Education Association (OEA) Aspiring Educator conference and are organizing a formal CSU chapter of Aspiring Educators. They are planning service-learning opportunities with teacher mentors from Centerville City Schools. Additionally, the Teacher Education Advisement and Partnership Center (TEAP-C), a support unit for the College of Education, and the College of Education have partnered with the Rockford Public School district in Rockford, Illinois. Twenty-four students, along with faculty/staff, will be traveling to Rockford March 1-3 to explore various schools and programs offered by the Rockford Aspiring Teacher residency program. This program will begin in the fall of 2023 for College of Education licensure majors.
And, that’s not all! We are pleased to announce that OEA is offering a CSU College of Education student a $5000 scholarship. The award will be presented at the HBCU Basketball Spring Classic in Columbus!
Looking ahead, please save the date of April 25! TEAP-C is excited to offer its first Educator Preparation Summit for potential future teachers. The summit will provide eight breakout sessions with beneficial information that will prepare and support students interested in the field of education and becoming a student at Central State University! This will be an exciting event that you want to attend!

Chanae Roker, Junior, Changing the World Through Education
Chanae Roker, a junior and the current Miss College of Education, was featured in a February 12 Dayton Daily News article, “Amid teacher shortage, here’s why one local Black student wants to be an educator” by Samantha Wildow. Chanae said, “I was able to relate to my teachers, and I want my students to be able to relate to me. I want my students to be able to say they had a teacher who encouraged them to go above and beyond, to never let the little things in life stop them.” Black teachers make up less than 9% of teachers in Ohio, but Ohio’s population is 17% Black. Having Black teachers like Chanae can make a world of difference to minority students.

Jasmine Walker, '20, Inspiring Black Female Engineers
Jasmine Walker, an alum of the class of 2020 and current water resources management instructor at Central State University, was featured in an NPR Think TV segment. Alum Angela Davis's, ’95, young daughter, Rylee, hosts the segment. As an environmental engineer, Jasmine studies water usage and quality to protect the environment. She shares her passion by giving back to her community and inspiring future generations of Black female engineers.

CSU Awarded $3 Million Grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce
Central State was awarded a $3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce to improve its internet infrastructure, expand options in telehealth and online education, upgrade remote learning classrooms, purchase student laptops, and provide remote learning opportunities for high school students. The grant will enable CSU students to have more reliable internet access, which is indispensable in today’s learning environment.

CSU Associate Professor on Black Communities in Trotwood and Dayton
Dr. Anthony Milburn, associate professor of history, was featured in "Rewinding history and shifting the narrative throughout West Dayton and Trotwood" - a Black History Month feature that discusses redlining and rebuilding.
