CARESOURCE FUNDS $200,000 COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKER CERTIFICATE PROGRAM

Central State University has announced a free Community Health Worker Certificate Program. CareSource has awarded a $200,000 grant to cover the cost of the program. The kickoff event took place on March 16, 2023, at 2 p.m. on Central State University’s Dayton Campus. Ohio Market President Steve Ringel of CareSource was in attendance. The program was in such high demand that even before the kickoff event the inaugural class was full.

CENTRAL STATE TO RESEARCH SELF-DRIVING CARS
Central State Partners on $15 Million U.S. Department of Transportation Project
Central State University and partners in the Region V University Transportation Center (UTC) received $15 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Center for Connected and Automated Transportation (CCAT). Along with CSU, partners include the University of Michigan, Purdue University, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Akron, Washtenaw Community College, Northwestern University, the University of Minnesota, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. This collaboration represents one of the nation's 10 regional DOT Centers of Excellence.
The CCAT aims to advance research on the safety, mobility, and sustainability of connected vehicles, connected infrastructure, and autonomous vehicles (CAVs), also called “self-driving” cars.
Central State will investigate the vulnerability of CAVs to cyber threats by engaging faculty and students from mathematics and computer science. Through the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences, CSU will uniquely address the inclusion of low-income and minorities in CAV research and access to technology. CSU environmental engineering faculty will investigate how to create sustainable CAV systems using renewable energy sources, minimizing carbon and environmental footprints.

CSU RECEIVES 129 COMPUTERS FOR STUDENTS IN NEED
The Federal Reserve Banks of Cleveland and Cincinnati donated 129 laptop computers to Central State University. The computers will be used by students in need in the fall 2023 semester.

UNIVERSITY OPEN HOUSE
Calling all prospective students! Central State University is hosting an Open House from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 15, 2023. Registration begins at 8 a.m. in the Beacom/Lewis Gymnasium. The Open House will provide opportunities to learn more about our beloved University, speak with current students and faculty, and explore the campus.

On March 18, the Central State University community gathered for a memorial celebrating the life and legacy of President Emeritus Dr. Arthur E. Thomas. Dr. Thomas will be greatly missed.

CSU HCASC TEAM ADVANCES TO THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
The CSU Honda Campus All-Star Challenge (HCASC) team advances to the HCASC National Championship! The HCASC is a team trivia competition that provides HBCU students the opportunity to show off their academic knowledge. The CSU team consists of Nya Brunson, Diana Williams, Kevonn Rayford, and Derrick Wilson, captain. The winning team will receive $75,000 for their institution. Cheer on the CSU HCASC team at 3 p.m. April 20-21 at HCASC.com!

MUSIC EDUCATION MAJOR WINS SCHOLARSHIP
Kamille Austin, music education major and Honors College member, won a $2,300 scholarship from the Three Arts Scholarship Fund.

CENTRAL STATE UNIVERSITY CHORUS PERFORMS "AWAKE, ARISE, ACHIEVE, AND LIVE" ON MULTI-STATE TOUR 2023
The Grammy Nominated Central State University Chorus was presented in concert at First Baptist Church 8th Street Chattanooga, Tennessee, as part of a multi-state tour. The theme of concert was “Awake, Arise, Achieve, and Live.” The Chorus, under the direction of Dr. Carlos B. Brown, presented a wide variety of works ranging from Baroque to Gospel and concert spirituals.

HBCU MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY
Calling all music industry power players! The Recording Academy's Black Music Collective and Amazon Music present Your Future is Now - a scholarship opportunity for HBCU students who will change the music industry. Five students will receive $10,000 and the opportunity to participate in a rotational program with Recording Academy and Amazon Music.

CHAS added three new interdisciplinary studies minors: environmental humanities, Africana studies, and gender and sexuality studies. These new minors provide exciting avenues for students to complement their majors through interdisciplinary thinking.

ENGLISH MAJOR LAUREN BROOKS, '20, WINS PRIZE FOR FIRST NOVEL
English major Lauren Brooks, '20, won the Goal Getter’s prize from Winn Publishing for her first novel, Lesedi and the Purple Lotus. Brooks says her book “is an amalgamation, I feel, of my experience as a Black woman and the experience of those who came before me. I am very much rooted in Black culture, especially coming from an HBCU, and having a degree in literature from an HBCU definitely has influenced me as a writer.” Check out her interview as she discusses her book and represents her alma mater!

ART FACULTY COLLECTION HIGHLIGHTED BY THE DAYTON SOCIETY OF ARTISTS
Associate Professor of Art Erin Smith-Glenn's collection “HAIRitage: A Cultural Journey & Experience” was highlighted by the Dayton Society of Artists.
Smith-Glenn says, "HAIRitage is based on cultural experiences and influences through my own perspective while highlighting the experiences that Black people share in many respects. This theme draws particular attention to BIPOC hair and adornment culture. As a Black woman living in a state that still does not support the CROWN Act, my work directly reflects this struggle and I portray it strongest through my mixed media drawings, paintings, sculptures and even live performances."
