Hello Craig,

I hope our chapter members are saving the date, October 3-5, for our Fall Gathering in “cowboy town”, Bandera, Texas. It is sure to be a fun one. We will start on Tuesday afternoon Oct. 3 and go thru mid-day Thursday, Oct. 5.

The planning committee of Kathleen and Pam are

putting together some great activities, which will include a Tuesday evening dinner generously hosted by Kathleen and Durwood Owen.

Included in our events will be a fabulous steak dinner in town and live country Western music, a wagon ride, and we will also be hosting our famous Wild Bill Hickok Belt Buckle Auction. If you want to bring an item for a silent auction that would be appreciated.

The registration fee is $35 per person which will include two evening meals, and

Wednesday’s activity. New members who have joined our chapter within the last year, should note that our chapter will subsidize your registration fee for this event. So, your only cost will be the hotel about $119 per night plus tax and lunch on Wednesday.

Hope to see everyone in October in Bandera.

Take Care,

Sam Schreiner YMCA Alumni Chapter President

October 3-5 in Banderas, Texas

The details...

Our gathering will begin Tuesday, October 3. A block of rooms has been reserved for YMCA Alumni at the Best Western in Bandera. 711 Main St. The phone number is 830-688-8081. The rate is $119 per room per night plus taxes. Please call by September 5 to confirm your reservation. There's no guarantee for this rate past this date.

After check in at 3, we will go to Durwood and Kathleen’s home in Pipe Creek just about 15 minutes away from downtown Bandera. They will be our hosts for a fajita dinner and a short meeting that evening. The address is 4653 Bear Spring Road, Pipe Creek, TX 78063. BYOB if you want to enjoy a few drinks with our colleagues.

Enjoy a complimentary breakfast at the hotel Wenesday. Then, at 9:30 a.m., we'll take a Western wagon ride around the town. There will be a time from about 11 – noon for browsing in some local shops. Lunch will be on your own. There are several restaurants in town: barbeque, Chinese, American or Mexican.

The afternoon includes some optional activities:

·      Horseback riding along the Medina River: $75 for a 1-hour ride. We need to know in advance if you would like this activity so we can make reservations with the outfitter. There will need to be a minimum of 3 people and a maximum of about 12.

·      Ranger-led interpretive talk at the Hill Country State Natural Area. Time to be determined.

·      Museum of Natural History (a newer museum in Bandera). Checking on the Senior price.

·      Hiking at the Hill country State Natural Area. State Park pass or admission fee required.

We will gather at the hotel around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday evening and walk to the 11th Street Bar and Grill. You will have a chance to grill your own steak (the chapter will provide steak or chicken breast). Potatoes and salad too. Live music will begin at 7 p.m.. Let’s go Western. Wear your boots, jeans, and hats.

Breakfast is at the hotel Thursday morning followed by our business meeting and auction. We have made lunch reservations for a Dutch treat at Camp Verde in Center Point. This is the historic camp down the road where camels were used to transport war supplies. There were over 100 camels there by 1865. There is also a unique General Store and The Great Camel Experiment.

Look like fun? Then please let our treasurer Jim Heiman know your plans to come.

Mail info to Jim Heiman, Treasurer, 1805 Club View St., Wichita Falls, TX 76302. (Click on blue name to send Jim an email.) (940) 782-0328 . Send him your name, address, email, and phone number, along with your $35 per person fee. Or let him know if you are a first-year member and your fee is on us, but we still need to know you are coming.

Also indicate if you want a horseback ride and steak or chicken breast at the dinner on Wednesday evening.

Don’t forget to make your reservations at the Best Western Hotel.

National Service Project:

Three work weeks left for 2023. Join us.

By Carmelita Gallo

Our National Service Project of YMCA Alumni, is in the middle of our second summer of Boots on the Ground to continue the construction of the Tiny Home Village in partnership with the YMCA of the Seven Council Fires in Dupree, SD.

There are three more opportunities to volunteer for a week on-site this fall and to be a part of this exciting project. Don’t delay if you are interested in having a worthwhile time in South Dakota helping to finish our first house and begin the construction on three more. A few slots are still available in Wave 5 (Sept. 12-19), in Wave 7 (Sept. 26-Oct. 3), and in Wave 8 (Oct. 3-10). No construction experience is required. I guarantee you won’t regret your time spent.

The first tiny home is nearly completed with some exterior work yet to be done. The interior of the house is ready for sheetrock, trim, painting, and several other details.

In addition, we are ready to start construction on the remaining three homes now that the foundations have been poured.

Please come and be part of the first National Service Project of our organization. Click the red button below for more information and to register. We need your help! If you have any questions, send an email here.
