Take precautions in hot weather
With temps expecting to reach triple digits today (July 30), people are encouraged to take precautions against heat-related illnesses.

The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory through Saturday, and has also developed a HeatRisk Forecast map to help people prepare. Temps are forecasted to be lower than the record levels in June, but may still pose health risks. Cooling Centers in Washington County are open, some of which are pet friendly. See map

Tips from Washington County Health and Human Services:

  • Stay in air-conditioned indoor locations as much as you can.

  • Check in with friends, family and neighbors, especially older adults and those with chronic medical issues, as they are more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses.

  • Drink plenty of fluids (water is best), even if you don’t feel thirsty.

  • Wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing and sunscreen.

  • Avoid strenuous activity in the heat of the day.

  • Take cool showers or baths.

  • Close your blinds and curtains to keep sunlight out.

  • Eat small, light meals.

  • Never leave children or pets in cars.
