Inventory of County road features begins
LiDAR van
Land Use & Transportation (LUT) has contracted Mandli Communications to complete a survey of County-maintained roads using Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) equipment. The LiDAR uses pulses of light to record details of the road, including painted striping, guardrails and traffic signs.

These LiDAR recordings are taken using equipment mounted on top of a van. Expect to see a black van with the mounted equipment throughout the summer, weather permitting.

“The LiDAR survey allows us to create a digital record of different elements along a road,” said John Fasana, Principal Engineer, Engineering, Traffic and Survey Division. “Once the images are collected, the consultant will create a catalog that our staff can use to better plan for maintenance and future projects.”

Some of the items being surveyed, such as traffic signs, have been tracked in printed catalogue. Other features, like bike lanes and striping, have never been fully documented. The data collected will be used in the implementation of Cityworks enterprise asset management system, and will ultimately be used to replace the existing hard-copy road log files.

The $765,000 LiDAR project, funded through the Traffic Engineering budget, will improve our infrastructure inventory and productivity.

“This project will help us better serve the community, reduce our carbon footprint, and help our staff be more efficient with their everyday workflows,” said Fasana. “We will be able to better anticipate maintenance and project specific needs and identify where traffic control devices need to be updated."
