Open for comment: Proposed 'Breweries and Cideries ordinance
Public hearings on proposed Ordinance No. 864: Breweries and Cideries have been scheduled, and public comment is being accepted.

The first public hearing will be 6:30 p.m. June 17 before the Washington County Planning Commission; the second is 10 a.m. July 21 before the Washington County Board of Commissioners.

The proposed ordinance would amend the Community Development Code to allow cider businesses and farm breweries to:

  • Have additional activities and events

  • Operate kitchens in accordance with specified criteria and standards

  • Operate a bed-and-breakfast facility as a home occupation

  • Conduct agritourism or other commercial events subject to specific standards

Development of this proposed ordinance is the result of changes to state law in 2017 and 2019 that allowed additional activities and events for cider businesses and farm breweries in rural areas. The 2016 Rural Tourism Study suggested that providing additional uses and activities on rural land was key to attracting visitors to the County's farms, farm stands, recreational opportunities and more.

Official communications on ordinances must be received in writing or provided at a hearing. Written testimony must include the author(s)' name, address and phone number and may submitted via email, fax, during a hearing or by U.S. Mail: Washington County Long Range Planning, 155 N First Ave., Suite 350, MS14, Hillsboro, OR 97124-3072.
