Applying ashes to start Lent

Wesley United Methodist Church and Flowing Forth UMC, both in Aurora, partnered in a joint Ash Wednesday service Tuesday, March 2, to open the Lenten season.

Rev. John Bell and Rev. Derek Rogers, pastors at Wesley and Flowing UMC, respectively, conducted the service at Aurora Christian School.

Rev. Rogers opened the service with a welcome and call to worship. After congregants joined in two hymns, Rev. Bell read scripture: Ecclesiastes 3:1-8. Continuing a tradition of joint Ash Wednesday services by Aurora-area Methodists, reflections were offered by laypeople DiAnn Wiley of Wesley and Chris Stewart of Flowing Forth.

Announcing a freewill offering collection, Rev. Rogers said it will go to Mercy Center Hospital in Aurora " provide encouragement and a show of gratitude to medical professionals in the Aurora area."

Rev. Bell reflected on the season of Lent and led a responsive prayer before applying ashes to congregants' foreheads or hands. The service closed with a benediction by Rev. Rogers.

UMCOR Sunday - March 27

Giving to this Special Sunday offering allows us to make a difference in the lives of communities and individuals whose lives have been upset by storms, wars, fires, displacement and climate change. This offering underwrites UMCOR’s “costs of doing business,” allowing UMCOR to keep the promise that 100% of any gift to a specific UMCOR project will go toward that project, not administrative costs.
