ABOUT THE COURSE

Taught by Instructor Melanie McClane, this course provides an overview of the mortgage process in today’s environment, with automated underwriting, the prevalence of both Appraisal Management Companies (AMCs) and Automated Valuation Models (AVMs). We will go through a timeline from beginning to end, and focus on what licensees need to know to make the process go smoothly, and to assist their buyers.

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE: AM 798 WITHDRAWN!

On Thursday, May 18th, Nebraska REALTORS® Association sent out an alert for REALTORS® to take action, and the Nebraska Legislature heard you! Within two hours, the amendment was pulled and the bill advanced without AM 1798.

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who took a second and called their Senator to protect homeownership. Senator Bostar withdrew AM 1798, an amendment to adopt the 2023 edition of the National Electrical Code, which would have increased housing costs and priced individuals out of the market.

Your efforts that evening stopped unnecessary and costly regulations on housing in Nebraska.

DIRECTOR SPOTLIGHT: DOUG DOHSE

What pushed you to pursue a career in real estate?  I was bartending and one of the regulars, who was a broker, kept asking me to get my real estate license. Since I knew all the regulars, what they drank and all about their families, he felt I would be good at making relationships. I then began working at a factory that had tuition reimbursement, so I decided to get my license as a second career. I went to work for the REALTOR® who first asked me to enter the real estate business and the rest is history.

What are some of your hobbies and interests? I enjoy golfing, hiking, and anything Nebraska Cornhusker, GBR!

Words of wisdom for new agents?  Build relationships. Never stop learning because knowledge is the key, embrace technology and build a strong online presence. Finally, stay persistent and resilient. This business has its ups and downs, so you need to stay committed to your goals.

What made you apply for a spot on the board?  I felt a need for some new voices to be heard. We have had a lot of good leaders on the board. I just felt it was time for someone else to speak.

What is your favorite vacation place?  It would be hard to pick just one, I have been blessed to see a lot of this great country. Loved most of the places I have been but as Dorothy says, “there’s no place like home”. My two favorite days of vacation are the first and last. I love going but I also love coming home.

Favorite food? If I said anything other than chicken wings, people who know me would stop reading!

What do you enjoy most about your job?  Helping other people’s dreams come true. Whether it’s a client sending me pictures of their new home I helped them buy or a new agent who just passed their real estate exam, helping others has always been the reason I am in this business.

Proudest or favorite moment in the industry?  The day the Real Estate Commission called me and gave me the news that I had been appointed to the Nebraska Real Estate Commission. A close second is when I get a text from a student who just passed the real estate exam.

How do you make a difference in your community? Volunteering. I give my time, skills, and resources to support community events, fundraisers, and housing-related projects. I share my knowledge about the real estate market, financial literacy, and homeownership rights and responsibilities. Educating individuals empowers them to make informed decisions and improves their quality of life.

If you could have lunch with anyone, alive or not, who would it be and why? My Father and my Sister. It’s been 12 years since I have seen them and I miss them both every day, God Bless.

Greatest challenge when starting out.  Lack of experience. I emphasized my enthusiasm, dedication, and willingness to go the extra mile for my clients. I highlighted relevant transferable skills and achievements from previous careers. I partnered with one of Omaha’s top agents to help mentor me and provide guidance and support until I gained experience.
