From your president...

Greetings… hope you all are doing well! Recently a group from our chapter attended YMCA Alumni Reunion '22 in New Orleans.

Besides spending time with old friends, it was an opportunity to hear about the progress being made on the National Service Project with the YMCA of the Seven Council Fires, as well as other YMCA Alumni activities. Appreciate all of you who have supported the Project.

We will be having our Annual Christmas Party Dec 3 (information below.) Hope to see many of you there. Best Wishes for a thankful Thanksgiving and a joyous Holiday Season.

A preliminary Lyon Chapter event calendar for 2023

Spring TBA:  Candlelight Theater

You’ll recall that the Candlelight Theater lost their venue in Claremont and is searching for a new one. They are guardedly optimistic they will be back up and running by this coming spring and, if they are, we’ll be there. This event is usually in May.

Summer TBA: Shakespeare Theater in Griffith Park

This is a FREE evening outdoor production near the old zoo in Griffith Park, performed by a really talented theater group. In July, we will bring picnic dinners, spread out blankets and lawn chairs, and see Knight of the Burning Pestle, written not by Shakespeare, but by a friend of his, Francis Beaumont. This rarely performed comedy is a wild joyride of a play and a love letter to theatrical invention. Perfect for family audiences and old folks like us! More info to come…

Fall TBA: A YMCA Camp Oakes Retreat

We’re going to take one more try at a retreat weekend at YMCA Camp Oakes, probably in September. This time we’ll give everyone plenty of notice so we can get it on our calendars early. Two years ago, those of us who attended had a great weekend!

Winter TBA:  Christmas Party time again

Pencil in December 2, 2023 for our next annual Christmas Party.

Happy Holiday Birthday

Have a Wedding Anniversary Coming Up?

We do! Bob and Monica Warnock will celebrate 51 years together Dec.18. We don’t have anniversary dates for our members (I just happened to remember ours!), but we would like to acknowledge these important relationship milestones in Lyon Links. Please email your wedding anniversary date to your intrepid editor by clicking HERE. If you do, you will see your names in Lyon Links at least twice each year! -- Bob

Reunion in the Big Easy... and a good time was had by all

Chapter President Paul Andresen and members Phyllis and Jim Murphy and John and Susan Green attended the twice-postponed national YMCA Alumni reunion in New Orleans last month. In spite of its COVID-related postponement, the event was well attended and, according to our chapter members pictured above, a great time was had by all.

Reunion '25

Watch for news about the next YMCA Alumni Reunion in early 2025 aboard Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas out of Galveston, Texas into the Western Caribbean.

National Service Project

It's a 'wrap' for 2022

It’s a Wrap for 2022! The first Tiny Home is up. Wave 5 volunteers got the walls up and Wave 6 volunteers put the roof panels on and protected the house for the winter with construction wrap and synthetic roofing paper. The National Service Project will be back to the site in May 2023 to continue our work.

Thanks to all our Lyon Chapter members who contributed to last year’s campaign on behalf of our brothers and sisters at the YMCA of the Seven Council Fires Lakota Sioux nation in South Dakota. Those of our chapter members who made one-year gifts or did not contribute last year will have the opportunity to support this project in 2023. More to follow on that.

Waves 3 and 4 of the National Service Project were filled with hard work, great fellowship, education and inspiration. We have been working on the cement foundations for all four tiny homes and significantly organizing, cleaning, and improving the YMCA of the Seven Council Fires program facilities.
