Help me find my owner .....

This coat was left hanging in the closet in the Narthex a couple weeks ago - and a black coat belonging to a member is missing. If you wear a black coat, please check to see if you grabbed the wrong one by mistake.

There's also a "Lost and Found" bin on the floor in the Narthex closet. If you're missing something, it may be in there!

Weekly Devotion

“God said to Moses, ‘I AM WHO I AM.’”

- Exodus 3:14a -

Names mean something, particularly in the Bible. God often changed the name of His people to mean something different. Abram became Abraham. Sarai became Sarah. Simon became Peter. Jacob became Israel. These new names defined a change in their relationship with God. The name changes defined their character in light of God’s mercy and grace.

Think about the people you encounter on a daily basis. You know the names of the people who mean the most to you. You might have a pleasant moment with a stranger in the grocery store, but you won’t remember them for long. If you run into someone whose name you know, you’ll likely have a conversation that builds your relationship. It is no surprise, then, that we have stories of people in the scriptures who want to know the name of God. When God changed Jacob’s name to Israel, Jacob asked God’s name. Jacob wanted to build that relationship with Him. So did Moses. He wanted to be able to identify the source of the promised deliverance to the Hebrews.

God does not mind our curiosity. He is given many names throughout the scriptures. His names define His character. His names help us to understand Him. His names indicate the things that He does for His people, with His people and through His people. Each name identifies just one aspect of God. Each name gives us just one piece to the puzzle, one glimpse into His nature and purpose. But God does not have a name like you and me. He does not have a name we can know or speak like our neighbors and friends. God answered Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” He is who He is. He will be who He will be. God’s divine name, Yahweh, is an identity without any limitations of time or space. It is only by the grace of a God who is beyond our human understanding that we could ever receive His promises.

Community Outreach

Operation Christmas Child

Filled boxes must be returned to the Narthex no later than November 16.

Since 1993, Samaritan’s Purse has provided an Operation Christmas Child shoebox gift to more than 220 million children in over 170 countries and territories. Local ministry partners hand out these tangible expressions of God’s love at child-friendly, Gospel-focused outreach events. Afterward, many of the boys and girls are invited to attend The Greatest Journey discipleship program. Through 12 Bible lessons, children learn how to follow Christ and share Him with others. They tell friends and family what they are learning, and more people put their faith in Christ — and go on to tell still others. Through these dynamic evangelism and discipleship efforts, believers and churches are multiplying!

Our Mission and Outreach team invites you to participate in Operation Christmas Child by filling a shoebox or two. Empty shoe boxes are on the table in the Narthex. You can also use a shoebox you may have at home.

Suggested gift lists for boys and girls are on the table in the Narthex and a link is available here: LIST There are labels in each box to indicate the recipient (boy/girl and age group). If you use your own shoebox, labels are also on the table. Please pray for the recipient of your shoebox as you pack it.

Please include a check for $10 (payable to Calvary) inside your shoebox to cover the cost of shipping, and do not seal your box.

November Mission of the Month

Care Net Pregnancy Center is a newer mission for Calvary and we are thrilled to be part of those helping to fund and spread its good work. Several of the Mission and Outreach committee members have visited and volunteered on site and have witnessed the work of God that this group does. A representative from CareNet will be with us on Sunday, November 16 to share more information on the important work they are doing.

Mission: To share the love of Christ and the hope of the Gospel with women facing an unplanned pregnancy.

Services: Pregnancy testing, ultrasounds, life-affirming options counseling, material support for mom and baby, classes and groups for pregnant and new moms and post-abortion counseling.

Last year they performed 904 pregnancy tests and 967 ultrasounds. They gave out over 60,000 diapers and met with 1,474 different women.

So far this year they have had over 160 women take classes, and each woman takes an average of about 10 classes.

Approximately 70% of women considering abortion choose life after visiting Care Net.

To support this important Mission of the Month, you may include it in your weekly offering envelope (designate donation next to Mission of the Month) or select the donation as "Mission of the Month" in your online giving

Women's Ministry

Women's Book Group December Discussion

The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver

The story is told by the wife and four daughters of Nathan Price, a fierce, evangelical Baptist who takes his family and mission to the Belgian Congo in 1959. They carry with them everything they believe they will need from home, but soon find that all of it—from garden seeds to Scripture—is calamitously transformed on African soil.

The novel is set against one of the most dramatic political chronicles of the twentieth century: the Congo's fight for independence from Belgium, the murder of its first elected prime minister, the CIA coup to install his replacement, and the insidious progress of a world economic order that robs the fledgling African nation of its autonomy.

Against this backdrop, Orleanna Price reconstructs the story of her evangelist husband's part in the Western assault on Africa, a tale indelibly darkened by her own losses and unanswerable questions about her own culpability.

Also narrating the story, by turns, are her four daughters—the teenaged Rachel; adolescent twins Leah and Adah; and Ruth May, a prescient five-year-old. These sharply observant girls, who arrive in the Congo with racial preconceptions forged in 1950s Georgia, will be marked in surprisingly different ways by their father's intractable mission, and by Africa itself. Ultimately each must strike her own separate path to salvation.

Their passionately intertwined stories become a compelling exploration of moral risk and personal responsibility.

The Women's Book Group will meet on:

This Week's Reflection

from Martin Luther

The one who would preach the Gospel must go directly to preaching the resurrection of Christ. (The one) who does not preach the resurrection is no apostle, for this is the chief part of our faith.

-Martin Luther

A few reminders ....

The right side of the Sanctuary (as you face the altar) is equipped with a hearing loop system which transmits an audio signal directly into a hearing aid via a magnetic field. This greatly reduces background noise, competing sounds, reverberation and other acoustic distortions that reduce clarity of sound.

Most hearing aids are equipped with a t-coil and connecting to this system is an easy switch on the hearing aid. If you need assistance during worship with this system, please reach out to an usher or any staff member.

Sanctuary Flowers

A wonderful way to celebrate a special occasion or remember a loved one is by sponsoring flowers at our altar. The cost is $35 and you may take them home following the Sunday morning worship.

The sign-up sheet is posted on the bulletin board in the Narthex, near the door to Fellowship Hall.

We invite you to provide

Hospitality Treats on Sunday

We invite you to stay after worship on Sunday mornings and enjoy fellowship time and a treat/cup of coffee in Fellowship Hall.

If you'd like to provide treats (donuts, bagels, fruit, etc.) for Sunday hospitality time, there is a sheet on the bulletin board outside of Fellowship Hall. You may bring the treats (six dozen) and drop them off in the kitchen, or you can pay $30 to the church office and the treats will be purchased for you. Please check the appropriate column when you sign up so the Hospitality coordinator will know what to expect.

The sign-up sheet is posted on the bulletin board.  Thank you for your support!

Do you need a new Church Directory?
