“When the days drew near for him to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem. And he sent messengers ahead of him, who went and entered a village of the Samaritans, to make preparations for him. But the people did not receive him, because his face was set toward Jerusalem. And when his disciples James and John saw it, they said, “Lord, do you want us to tell fire to come down from heaven and consume them?” But he turned and rebuked them.”
- Luke 9:51-55
Given our choice, we would all prefer a doctor who treats the root cause of our disease to a doctor who merely manages the symptoms. In our Gospel lesson, we see these same two options, albeit implicitly. On the one hand, Jesus knows that the time for him to be taken up has come. So, he set his face to go to Jerusalem. Why did he do this? Jesus did this because he was determined to attack the root cause of our sin by dying on the cross and rising from the dead.
On the other hand, Jesus’ disciples viewed him as a conquering Messiah who would march to Jerusalem, throw the Romans out, and restore the kingdom to Israel. They also thought that Jesus was a prophet in the mold of Elijah (Luke 9:19), the very prophet who had called down fire from heaven to destroy his enemies (2 Kings 1). This is why they proposed calling fire down from heaven to consume the Samaritans when these Samaritans refused to receive them. So, if the disciples had had their way, Jesus would have used his power to throw the Romans out while incinerating a few Samaritans in the process. However, this would merely have managed certain symptoms of sin while leaving the root cause intact.
Fortunately, Jesus’ vision prevailed. He went to Jerusalem and died on the cross to eliminate the guilt of our sin. Then he rose from the grave to break the power of our sin. On Pentecost, he poured out the Holy Spirit upon the Church to eliminate the pollution of our sin. And ultimately, in the final resurrection, he will eliminate all the effects of our sin. In Jesus, therefore, we have a doctor who attacks the root cause of our sin. But in so doing, he eventually eliminates all the symptoms of our sin as well.

June Mission of the Month
NALC International Mission
through the World Mission Prayer League
| | |
The World Mission Prayer League (WMPL) is an official ministry partner of the NALC. WMPL grew out of a God-given burden to pray for the unreached interiors of Africa, Asia, and Latin America in the 1930’s. A band of students, pastors and friends in the Minneapolis area joined together in prayer that the Lord of the harvest would send laborers into his harvest.
WMPL says of itself … we are committed to pray, as Jesus commands his followers in Matthew 9:38 – “Ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” We are a … community of men and women who are committed to prayer - the “working method” of our mission.
To support this important Mission of the Month, you may include it in your weekly offering envelope or designate the donation as "Mission of the Month" in your online giving.
| | | |
The World Mission Prayer League exists to see that populations with limited or no access to the Gospel experience the love of Christ and that believers and communities of believers in the Americas and elsewhere engage in active and collaborative participation in living out their roles in the great commission.
Our Mission of the Month offerings will:
- Directly support the work of the World Mission Prayer League;
- Support a “Ministry Fund” for our missionaries and support for orphans whose parents died of COVID.
We hope you will learn more about WMPL – their website is www.wmpl.org, and generously support the mission work Calvary does in India through this wonderful Lutheran ministry.

The right side of the Sanctuary (as you face the altar) is equipped with a hearing loop system which transmits an audio signal directly into a hearing aid via a magnetic field. This greatly reduces background noise, competing sounds, reverberation and other acoustic distortions that reduce clarity of sound.
Most hearing aids are equipped with a t-coil and connecting to this system is an easy switch on the hearing aid. If you need assistance during worship with this system, please reach out to an usher or any staff member.

We invite you to provide
Hospitality Treats on Sunday
We invite you to stay after worship on Sunday mornings and enjoy fellowship time and a treat/cup of coffee in Fellowship Hall.
If you'd like to provide treats (donuts, bagels, fruit, etc.) for Sunday hospitality time, there is a sheet on the bulletin board outside of Fellowship Hall. You may bring the treats (six dozen) and drop them off in the kitchen, or you can pay $30 to the church office and the treats will be purchased for you. Please check the appropriate column when you sign up so the Hospitality coordinator will know what to expect.
The sign-up sheet is posted on the bulletin board. Thank you for your support!
