Delegates are Needed For
Annual NALC Convocation

We are seeking two members to participate as delegates of Calvary Lutheran Church for this year’s NALC Online Mission Convocation. More than 500 delegates are expected to participate online in the Convocation and Zoom access will be required.
You’ll be able to hear from Bishop Dan Selbo, participate in elections and voting, and listen to updates from across the NALC. There is no cost to you to serve one of our two delegates.

This Week's Devotional - Listening for the Promise

“For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone.” -Ephesians 2:18-20
In 2003 I spent a semester studying abroad in Aalborg, Denmark. It was a life-long dream, and I was so excited to arrive at what would be my home for the next five months of my life. I did my best to wear clothing that helped me fit in. Danes would wear mostly neutral colors, especially gray and black. And for the most part, I could blend in pretty well… until… until I spoke Danish. I had a very limited knowledge of the language, and I could certainly get by, but my thick American accent gave me away every time. And while I did my best to blend in, it was obvious that I was a foreigner, a stranger in a strange land.
Danes have different customs and traditions from Americans. It first hit me hard when Thanksgiving rolled around. The other American students and I put on a traditional Thanksgiving meal for our Danish friends and other international students. It was a lot of fun, but it wasn’t the same as celebrating in our homeland.
It can be hard, even scary, to feel out of place. We can feel as though there are barriers up, and it can be difficult to knock them down. Paul was writing this letter to brand new Christians in Ephesus. They were really struggling with barriers and cultural differences. These differences and divisions had existed between these two cultures (Jews and Gentiles) for centuries. And it led to hostility and being at odds with one another. That, in turn, led to division with God. Their sinfulness put up barriers between themselves and God. So how does one knock down those barriers? Well, we can’t do it on our own. We must rely on God to knock them down for us. And God isn’t going to do it with hostility the way we sinful humans might do.
We are reconciled to God through Christ. Last week we heard how we are marked with the cross of Christ and sealed with the promise of his Holy Spirit. Through Christ, our differences can be knocked down and laid aside. We are united in Christ. We are apart of his family. God’s grace is enough for us, and he freely gives us his grace no matter what kind of barriers we may have with others. Because God forgives us through suffering, death, and resurrection of Christ Jesus, we are called to forgive one another.

CELEBRATION RINGERS are hosting a Summer Training Sessions through August 18! This opportunity is open to kids 7+, young people and folks of all ages. Mini-workshops will be held after Sunday worship for about 10-15 minutes and we will focus on basic technique and accompanying a familiar hymn. Experienced ringers will come alongside to help and demonstrate techniques. If you’ve ever wanted to ring and wondered where to start, seize the opportunity to make a joyful noise!
HEY KIDS! The organist, Nicole, occasionally needs an assistant. Her legs are too short to reach the random chime button (AKA the Zimbelstern). If you can sit by the organ and hit the button when I nod, you’re hired! Additionally, I need someone to turn the page while I’m playing the postlude. Please text me and let me know if your child is willing to volunteer to be the Organist’s Assistant, and I will communicate the days I need help. Thanks so much!

As part of our commitment to the World Mission Prayer League, we have vowed to pray for populations with limited or no access to the Gospel. We have been assigned the Hindi-speaking Yadav Hindus in India, and here is a little about this people group:
- There are 40.9 million Hindi-speaking Yadav Hindus in the country of India
- There are 0.01% recorded Christian adherents among this people group.
- The complete Bible is in Hindi and there are many print, audio and video resources
- They have expertise in oral traditions and group singing in praise of the god Vishnu, Krishna, or one of the many other gods that they worship
- Yadav need to hear about the way of salvation. Almost all Yadav die never hearing the name of Jesus even once!
Here are a few points from WMPL to guide your prayers:
- Pray that the Lord will send harvest workers among the Yadav in India to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ in word and deed
- Pray that the Lord will soften the hearts of the Yadav Hindus to hear the Gospel and receive Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord
- Pray for Hindi-speaking Yadav families to prosper spiritually and phpysically as they experience a relationship with Jesus Christ.
- Pray for Yadav culture to be renewed and enhanced by the work of the Holy Spirit to be shaped into a God-centered and God-honoring activity and mold.
Thank you for your prayers for the Hindi-speaking Yadav of India.

HOPE STREET MINISTRY
a Greenhouse for People on 26th and Capitol
Hope Street Ministry helps broken men, women and children cultivate hope and provides protection from the outside elements, and most importantly, supports growth together in a relationship with Jesus Christ.
Hope Street Ministry is home to about 40 men, women and children whose lives have been profoundly affected by the toxic environment they grew up in, their own poor choices, or drug and alcohol abuse.
Empowered by the active Grace of Christ, the staff, volunteers, and members create a nurturing community for people to live, learn and develop new habits to flourish.
Their programs include:
- Integrative Wellness: Improving diet, sleep, exercise and managing stress
- Addiction support with AODA counselors and group work
- Forgiveness
- Education with GED assessment and tutoring
- Family Dynamics - relational boundaries and parenting skills
- Life Skills and Job Preparedness
- Healing from Trauma-including sexual abuse

The Roaring Twenties--the Jazz Age--has been characterized as a time of Gatsby frivolity. But it was also the height of the uniquely American hate group, the Ku Klux Klan. Their domain was not the old Confederacy, but the Heartland and the West. They hated Blacks, Jews, Catholics and immigrants in equal measure, and took radical steps to keep these people from the American promise. And the man who set in motion their takeover of great swaths of America was a charismatic charlatan named D.C. Stephenson.
Stephenson was a magnetic presence whose life story changed with every telling. Within two years of his arrival in Indiana, he’d become the Grand Dragon of the state and the architect of the strategy that brought the group out of the shadows – their message endorsed from the pulpits of local churches, spread at family picnics and town celebrations. Judges, prosecutors, ministers, governors and senators across the country all proudly proclaimed their membership. But at the peak of his influence, it was a seemingly powerless woman – Madge Oberholtzer – who would reveal his secret cruelties, and whose deathbed testimony finally brought the Klan to their knees.
"A Fever in the Heartland" marries a propulsive drama to a powerful and page-turning reckoning with one of the darkest threads in American history.

While cash and checks are always welcome, the “Give Online” button on the Calvary Lutheran Church website provides another option. And, with the expansion of our vendor’s software, the options are now expanded and customized. In addition to giving to the General Operating Fund, Building Fund and Mission of the Month, you can now specify contributions for Altar Flowers, Sunday Morning Fellowship Treats, NALC, etc.

Sanctuary Flowers
A wonderful way to celebrate a special occasion or remember a loved one is by sponsoring flowers at our altar. The cost is $35 and you may take them home following the Sunday morning worship.
The 2024 sign-up sheet is posted on the bulletin board in the Narthex, near the door to Fellowship Hall.

We invite you to provide
Hospitality Treats on Sunday
We invite you to stay after worship on Sunday mornings and enjoy fellowship time and a treat/cup of coffee in Fellowship Hall.
If you'd like to provide treats (donuts, bagels, etc.) for Sunday hospitality time, there is a sheet on the bulletin board in Fellowship Hall. You may bring the treats (six dozen) and drop them off in the kitchen, or simply add a “P” behind your name, pay $30 to the church office and the treats will be purchased for you.

The right side of the Sanctuary (as you face the altar) is equipped with a hearing loop system which transmits an audio signal directly into a hearing aid via a magnetic field. This greatly reduces background noise, competing sounds, reverberation and other acoustic distortions that reduce clarity of sound.
Most hearing aids are equipped with a t-coil and connecting to this system is an easy switch on the hearing aid. If you need assistance during worship with this system, please reach out to an usher or any staff member.
