Focusing on the Positive

We included a pretty picture of Azaleas in bloom this month. We know that after the Winter Storm, those may be all the blooms you see this year!

But we also know that, if we are patient, beautiful blooms will return next year. It is that hope and optimism that keeps us going in spite of the challenges.
The spirit of hope and optimism was demonstrated by our members in their statements about "What I love about being part of a woman's club" in 25 words or less.
The statements have been captured in a video that is heart-warming, inspiring and such a positive note for all after what we’ve all just gone through.

Click here and have a look. The video is about 9 minutes long.

If you are not in the video, we would love to capture your thoughts and add them to this wonderful collection. How?
  • Arrive early to our March 3 meeting and we'll capture your thoughts right then.
  • If you cannot attend the meeting, make a selfie video on your phone. If that seems like a lot, just ask your grand children to help! Forward your video to Rebecca Marek and she will incorporate it into the Heritage Group video.

March Event - March 10, 2021
Community Outreach
The Heritage Group's annual Valentine Card and Candy project, optimized for the pandemic was successfully and joyfully completed. Members and grandchildren, safely at home, joined in creating beautiful hand-made Valentine cards with personalized messages for our neighborhood seniors residing at Brookdale The Heights and The Village of The Heights.

Once more we are gratified by the generous and kind hearts of our members. We are indebted with gratitude to Amy Herger Amos, Community Outreach Chair and Rebecca Marek, Programs VP for their respective roles in drafting The Plan, creating the necessary spreadsheets, coordinating with the members, sending out all the lovely reminders, prepping for porch drop-off, inventorying and categorizing the donations and finally to the last step of bagging the treats attractively!
Valentine Card for Women's Empowerment Group: In 2020, we delivered Valentine's Cards and Cookies to the Houston Interfaith Ministries Women's Empowerment Group. We know that the women, just like us, are having to meet by Zoom. So this year we created a video Valentine's Card for them that included some clips from our last meeting.
Socks and Undies: The Heritage Group is delighted to announce the completion of the 2020 Socks and Undies Donation Drive. Thanks to the generous hearts of our members who both drove the "extra mile" personally delivering in-kind donations directly to Amy Amos' porch and wrote and mailed checks to support this worthy cause, we were finally able to overcome all the obstacles and successfully complete delivery of a total 615 pairs of needed undergarments to Field and Helms Elementary Schools, Alexander Hamilton Middle School - Houston ISD and Heights High School. Thank-you with much appreciation to Amy Herger Amos for persisting calmly with a smile throughout all the obstacles and bringing this project to fruition!

Additional thanks are also due to Rosina Chevalier for diligently monitoring our PO Box and Jan Donaldson for dutifully accounting for all the necessary financial record-keeping. Our club has survived 121 years while others have not thanks in large part to the selfless dedication of volunteers like Amy, Rosina and Jan. We thank each one of you and all our donors for your kind-hearted, thoughtful and generous support.
February Recap
February Meeting: Attired in colorful red and pink Valentine outfits, Heritage Group members shared beautiful sentimental snippets of what they love best about being part of a woman's club in 25 words or less: the socializing, the community service, the history, the lasting friendships, the delicious food, the concept that women from all walks of life are able to come together as one, speaking one universal language: the language of women.
Shea Hill, past Evening Group President, now with
The Women's Institute of Houston graciously presented an overview of current WIH courses sure to tantalize the viewer. We were touched by the historical similarity of the Institute's 1950's origins in the founding members' parlor guided by a motivation for educational enlightenment reminiscent of our own dear HHWC foremothers' mission in 1900. The WIH is truly another one of Houston's legacy gems awaiting your discovery!

Thank-you to all who were able to join us. In case you missed it, here is a link to a recording of the February Meeting.
