November Meeting

With Thanksgiving approaching we have many reasons to be thankful this year. As part of giving back to our community, we are asking our members to bring a jar of peanut butter and/or a can of tomato products to the November meeting! Why is that?

Heights Interfaith Ministries (HIM) Food Pantry is in need of peanut butter and tomato products to give out with their weekly food parcels. Help us restock their shelves by bringing a jar or two of peanut butter and/or a can or two of tomato products (whole or diced tomatoes, paste, sauce, rotel, etc.). If you forget, we will also be taking up a cash collection at the meeting to help restock the food pantry shelves.

Olivewood Tour
Our October excursion to Olivewood Cemetery, Houston’s first incorporated African American cemetery, benefitted from fine weather. Founded in 1875, the cemetery later fell into neglect. For the next century, the cemetery remained a jungle – the headstones buried under massive carpets of vegetation while only the larger mortuary architecture rose above the undergrowth hinting at Olivewood’s location.

Over the last 30 years, as more acreage of the cemetery receives regular maintenance and care, Olivewood is pursuing a program of plot and walkway beautification as well as restoration of historic headstones. In consideration of the need for cemetery restoration and the importance of this historical landmark to the community, the Heritage Group Board has approved a donation of $250.
