Aunt Lela is back by popular demand! Aunt Lela provided the money for the old Aldie Mansion and its property and also ensured that her nephews and niece (Henry C., William R. and Elizabeth Mercer) received a "proper" education, complete with numerous trips to Europe where both men discovered the inspiration for their artwork. Membership coordinator Tammy Schane transforms herself into Aunt Lela and tells the story of how a young woman from Bucks County became an international globetrotter and minor celebrity of her time. Tours available afterwards.

PECO Presents $15,000 Check to Heritage Conservancy to Create Native Pollinator Meadow and Prevent Stream Bank Erosion

On Thursday, October 20th, leaders from PECO presented Heritage Conservancy with a check for $15,000 while outside of the Conservancy's Aldie Mansion home. $10,000 of the grant from PECO will go toward the planting of a native pollinator meadow at Heritage Conservancy's Jackson Pond Preserve in Buckingham, PA, and $5,000 of the grant will go toward stream bank restoration on the organization's Hart's Woods Preserve in Doylestown, PA.

Pollinator species (such as bees and butterflies) support nearly 40% of the world's food crop production, and many of our vital pollinators are threatened with extinction. PECO's support will enable Heritage Conservancy to plant a 4-acre native pollinator meadow on its Jackson Pond Preserve. This meadow will provide habitat for all aspects of a pollinator's life cycle, it will become a destination for community members to view and enjoy our native wildlife, and it will serve to educate the general public concerning the importance of pollinators to human foods. It will take two years to establish the wildflower meadow.

The stream bank restoration on Heritage Conservancy's Hart's Woods Preserve will help to increase water quality and provide critical habitat. The removal of invasive species followed by the planting of native trees and shrubs along a tributary of the Neshaminy Creek will strengthen the stream bank in this area and help to filter pollutants in the water. Since native wildlife prefers native plantings for food and shelter, it will benefit local wildlife as well.

"Heritage Conservancy is excited about this partnership with PECO," said Jeff Marshall, President of Heritage Conservancy. "The grant from PECO will allow our organization to not only preserve and protect our natural resources but also enhance two of our properties while strengthening our effort to protect our water and food supply."
Our Volunteers Have "Hart!"
On Thursday, October 13th, Heritage Conservancy staff and 10 local community volunteers participated in a fun tree planting and trail cleanup at the Conservancy's Hart's Woods Preserve in Doylestown, PA. Hart's Woods Preserve is an approximately 20-acre parcel of mature woodlands that contains a tributary of the Neshaminy Creek.

The group of volunteers included students from Delaware Valley University's Project Earth Club, and we even saw a familiar face back with us--Anastasia, one of our summer conservation steward interns!

Throughout the day, our crew planted 30 trees of 9 different native species in the riparian buffer along the creek tributary. These trees will strengthen the stream bank and help to protect water quality. As well, the group cleared out about an acre of the invasive winged euonymus shrub (also known as burning bush) to give space for native plants to grow. It's important to make way for native plant and tree life because they provide habitat and food for native wildlife, unlike their non-native competition.

Hart's Woods Preserve features a wonderful tree-lined walking trail that meanders about the property and provides our community with a place to connect with nature and explore the great outdoors. Trails require continual monitoring and upkeep, and thankfully, our trusty volunteers were there to help with clearing branches and brush to keep the trail in tip-top shape.

If you'd like to visit this property, please contact Alex at [email protected] for directions.

This restoration project was made possible by the TreeVitalize Watersheds Grant prorgam, and the Plant One Million Campaign, managed by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, with funding from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection's Growing Greener program, as well as Aqua PA for projects located within its source water protection zones.
