Heritage Month 2026: Celebrating Over A Century Of Ministry

Greetings!

August is our Heritage Month, and UOC invites you to join us in celebration!

Unity of Columbus began as a small study group in Spring 1910 and blossomed into a fully-fledged Unity community. In the 116 years we have served the Columbus area with love in our hearts, we have been supported by at least one Licensed Unity Teacher since the very first person certified by the Unity headquarters as a teacher came here upon earning her credentialing in 1912. Currently, we are blessed with five LUTs: Shirley Williams, Jewelene Henson, LaDonna Prillerman, Susanna Warren, and myself.

This Sunday is our Annual Heritage Picnic; if you have a few moments after this Sunday's service, take time to connect with your LUTs, get to know them a bit more, or deepen an already-established connection. You'll be glad you did!

All are encouraged to bring a side dish, a dessert, or beverages, as well as a friend or two - family members are also most welcome.

Additionally, there will be opportunities to share your story. What has Unity meant to you? What were you feeling when you first walked through the doors for the first time? What are your hopes for the future of your spiritual community?

This summer, and throughout the remainder of this year, we continue our celebration of fifty years in our current spiritual campus on Maize Road: Many thanks to all who volunteered, served, taught, set up, cleaned up, participated, and broke bread with us - certainly on our Anniversary Celebration date of July 18, yes, but all through the entire half-century, as well. You are the Light of this world!

Believe it or not, dear readers, it has been just over ten years since I took on the role of Editor-In-Chief for this Newsletter, and it has been nearly fourteen years since I first began writing featured articles, mostly focused on the power and practice of affirmative prayer. In this milestone year, it is time for new thoughts, and fresh perspectives. In continuing this celebration of community, starting with this issue, we will be sharing the voices of other talented writers, most especially our own Rev. Dan, all of whom have spirit-centered thoughts to share with you - we hope you enjoy reading!

You are welcome, always, to Unity of Columbus. Unity leaves no one out. This Sunday will be a continuing celebration of our community - your community of laughter, life, and love. Your presence at our Picnic will be most vital, for we would not be the community we are... without YOU.

We look forward to seeing you on Sunday... Our Youth and Family Ministry will be holding a summer session, and all will be fed, as we will whet your appetite, physically and spiritually!

Joyful Blessings,

Daryn L. Wells, LUT

Editor-In-Chief

"Flipping the Coin"

with Rev. Dan Holloway, Minister of Record

Kick off our Heritage Month with Rev. Dan, who brings a message reminding us of the importance of making decisions mindfully - overcoming fear over circumstances, challenges, or an uncertain future.

We do this through our Power of Will...

We invite you to join us for our Annual Picnic, which will take place immediately after the Service. Bring a side dish or dessert to share! (Main items, i.e., burgers, hot dogs, etc., will be provided by UOC.)

"The True Spirit of Gratitude"

with Daryn L. Wells, LUT

Love Offering

The practice of gratitude demonstrates an awareness of spiritual Truth: that our Good can never be separated from us.

This seven-part discussion series explores how we can elevate our consciousness, making gratitude the foundation of all that we think, say, and do.

We offer the words of Paul, who wrote, "In all things, give thanks." A right understanding of this inspires us, regardless of the conditions around us and the affairs of the world, to carry genuine thanksgiving in our hearts.

"ALL things?!" we may ask, in resistance... For more, and to address this Scripture and the questions that will naturally arise, you are invited to participate in this lively discussion be sure to join us on Wednesdays through August 26!

We look forward to connecting with you!

Living Prayer As A Way Of Being

The Doctor Is IN!
A New Feature Article Series

By Pam Cobb, MD

"Oh, My Aching Back!" (Part One)

Why discuss back pain? Chronic back pain is extremely common in the US with over 8% of adults (16 million) experiencing it at some time in their lives.

Why so common? In a word, gravity. With aging, the discs in the back can start to desiccate (dry out). This can lead to pressure on a nerve (when it radiates down the leg, it’s called sciatica) or arthritis in the little joints that hold our vertebrae together (facet joints). If one has osteoporosis (weak or brittle bones), micro fractures can occur which can be asymptomatic or very painful and eventually cause kyphosis (stooping forward) or worsening scoliosis (spinal curvature to the side).

What to do when your back starts to hurt? Acute low back pain occurs commonly and often can be addressed by rest, ice, and OTC pain relievers such as ibuprofen (Advil) or naproxen (Aleve), which should ALWAYS be taken with food. If it persists more than 3-5 days, it’s advisable to seek medical attention. Your family doctor can easily manage this in the office.

(Beats a 4-6 hour wait in the ER.)
