What is an Electrophysiologist?
Your Primary Care physician or Cardiologist may refer you to an Electrophysiologist if you have an abnormal heart rhythm and need to be evaluated for a pacemaker or defibrillator implant, are being considered for cardiac ablation (a procedure that scars tissue in your heart to block irregular electrical signals) or experience episodes of syncope (a sudden loss of consciousness). At that point, you may wonder, “What exactly is an Electrophysiologist?”

Cardiac Electrophysiology is a branch of Cardiology and deals with the study and treatment of rhythm disorders of the heart. Electrophysiologists are trained to study the electrical impulses in your heart that control its rhythm and trigger heartbeats. An Electrophysiology study is a series of tests that examine your heart’s electrical activity, and is used to diagnose abnormal heartbeats or arrhythmia. The test is performed by inserting catheters and then wire electrodes, which measure electrical activity, through blood vessels that enter the heart. Electrophysiologists treat heart arrhythmias, including atrial fibrillation (AFib), caused by disruptions in the normal heart rhythm.
