Dr. Maninder Bedi of the Heritage Valley Heart & Vascular Center is the first physician in the Pittsburgh region to use the Medtronic PulseSelect™ Pulsed Field Ablation (PFA) System, a new minimally invasive procedure that uses pulsed electric fields to treat patients with Atrial Fibrillation (AFib). The Medtronic PulseSelect™ PFA System is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of patients with intermittent or persistent Atrial Fibrillation.
Atrial Fibrillation is one of the most common and undertreated heart rhythm disorders, affecting millions of people worldwide. AFib is an irregular heart rhythm that affects the upper chambers (atria) of the heart. This arrhythmia prevents blood from being pumped efficiently to the rest of your body. As a result, AFib may impact your ability to perform daily activities, cause you to feel tired and impact your overall quality of life. If left untreated, AFib could lead to stroke or heart failure.
AFib ablation, a minimally invasive procedure that uses hot or cold energy to create scars in your heart tissue where the arrhythmia (or irregular/abnormal heart rhythm) is occurring, is often used to treat patients with AFib. PFA is a breakthrough ablation technology that uses pulsed electric fields, rather than temperature extremes, to achieve the same therapeutic effect yet better protect surrounding tissue.
Dr. Bedi is excited to add the PulseSelect™ PFA System as an option for patients diagnosed with AFib. According to Dr. Bedi, “Pulsed Field Ablation for the treatment of atrial fibrillation is the future of atrial fibrillation management. The procedure is quicker, has fewer complication rates, and is more effective than the current technologies. This new technology will help physicians treat atrial fibrillation patients in an efficient manner and give the patients long-term success from their symptoms.”
If you or someone you know has AFib, talk to your doctor to see if the PulseSelect™ Pulsed Field Ablation System may be an option. For more information on the Heritage Valley Heart & Vascular Center, please click here.
