National Immunization Awareness Month

August is National Immunization Awareness Month and, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website, on-time vaccination throughout childhood is essential because it helps provide immunity before children are exposed to potentially life-threatening diseases. Vaccines are tested to ensure that they are safe and effective for children to receive at the recommended ages.

For more information on immunization for children, teens and young adults, please CLICK HERE to visit the Heritage Valley Pediatrics webpage. To make an appointment with one of the physicians at Heritage Valley Pediatrics, please call one of our five locations: Aliquippa/Hopewell (724-375-6161); Beaver (724-774-4070); Calcutta, OH (330-385-1412); Chippewa/Beaver Falls (724-773-6842); or Edgeworth/Sewickley (412-741-2622).

Also according to the CDC:

  • Adults should get a flu vaccine every year before the end of October, if possible.
  • Adults need a Tetanus-Diphtheria (Td) vaccine every 10 years.
  • Healthy adults 50 years and older should get a shingles vaccine.
  • Adults 65 years or older need one dose of pneumococcal conjugate vaccine followed by one dose of pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine. Adults younger than 65 years who have certain health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer or HIV should also get one or both of these vaccines.
  • Adults may need other vaccines based on health conditions, job, lifestyle, or travel habits.

And let’s not forget about COVID-19 vaccines! For information on those, please read our “Covid Corner” section or visit our website. Please discuss all vaccines with your Primary Care Physician. If you are looking for a PCP, we encourage you to call the Heritage Valley Physician Referral Line at 1-844-769-DOCS (3627).

Breastfeeding Class and Support Group

World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated during the first week of August, so this seems like a good time to talk about Heritage Valley’s free Breastfeeding Classes via Zoom. Classes are held six times a year, with the next class scheduled for Sunday, September 11, at 3 pm. Led by a board-certified lactation consultant, the class provides participants with the opportunity to learn about breastfeeding and to share personal experiences. Heritage Valley also offers a breastfeeding support group that meets twice a month via Zoom. The Breastfeeding Moms Network meets each month on the first Tuesday from 10 am to 12 pm and on the third Tuesday from 6 to 8 pm. The next meeting is scheduled for August 16 at 6 pm.

Heritage Valley has lactation consultants, lactation counselors and Registered Nurses with special training to support breastfeeding families. We also offer one-on-one consultations with Board Certified Lactation Consultant Liz Leon. Liz is available by appointment every afternoon in the Heritage Valley Pediatrics Chippewa office. To schedule an appointment with Liz, please call 724-773-6842.
