January is Cervical Health Awareness Month, which makes this a good time to remind women to schedule their annual exams with their GYN physician. According to the National Cervical Cancer Coalition, more than 13,000 women in the United States are diagnosed with invasive cervical cancer each year, yet cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers today with vaccination and appropriate screening (Pap and HPV tests). In most cases, cervical cancer can be prevented through early detection and treatment of abnormal cell changes that occur in the cervix years before cervical cancer develops.

Heritage Valley has expanded its Medical Nutrition Therapy access to include adolescents and teens, 12 years and older. Nutrition related concerns such as weight control (under or overweight), food allergies, picky eating habits, and chronic conditions such as celiac disease are all appropriate. Pediatric patients with diabetes will be referred to UPMC Children’s Hospital for outpatient nutrition counseling. For eating disorder treatment, please ask your pediatrician for a list of local programs.

50 North of Christ Church at Grove Farm and Heritage Valley Health System are presenting Wellness Expo 2024 on Saturday, January 27, from 10 am to 2 pm at Christ Church at Grove Farm, 249 Duff Road, Sewickley. Guests of all ages will have the opportunity to attend demonstrations, hear from medical professionals, browse products and services, and receive various health screenings. There is no fee, but registration is required.

Heritage Valley Health System’s Dr. Karen Jerome-Zapadka will present Metabolic Health: Exploring the Role of Our Ultra-Processed Food Diet at 10 a.m. She will discuss good metabolic health, metabolic dysfunction and insulin resistance (IR), reviewing the many diseases associated with IR. She will explore the impact of our ultra-processed food diet with an emphasis on the fructose component of sugar, ending with a message of hope and a challenge to take health care into your own hands. This presentation is especially pertinent to parents and grandparents raising young children, where metabolic dysfunction is the leading cause of fatty liver disease and is being seen in epidemic proportions.
