Maria Furka, MSN, RN of Aliquippa is the recipient of the 2024 Anne Hitchak Nursing Scholarship, given in honor of Mrs. Hitchak and her contributions to the nursing profession. The Scholarship is awarded to a Heritage Valley Sewickley nurse in good standing who is pursuing a Master’s Degree in nursing, and is funded by donations from Mrs. Hitchak’s family and friends through the Heritage Valley Health System Foundation. Maria attended Carlow University’s Family Nurse Practitioner program full-time while working part-time at Heritage Valley Sewickley, and earned her Master’s of Science degree in Nursing (MSN) in December.
Maria said her favorite aspect of nursing is “being able to care for people on some of their worst days and making a positive impact on their lives. Patients trust us to care for them and advocate for them, and I love being that person.” She is grateful to be able to carry on Mrs. Hitchak’s legacy. “I commend Anne Hitchak for her contribution to the medical field and her dedication to medicine while balancing school, work and raising her family.”
Anne Hitchak is a former Vice President of Nursing at Heritage Valley, and her commitment to nursing is highly regarded by all. Her encouragement of promising nurses to become administrators, her mentoring of countless graduate students, and her pursuit of compassion and excellence in all aspects of nursing make her an ideal role model.
