Virus or Bacterial Infection:

When are Antibiotics Needed?

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), antibiotics are often prescribed when they are not needed for respiratory infections. Antibiotics are only needed for treating certain infections caused by bacteria. Viral illnesses cannot be treated with antibiotics. When an antibiotic is not prescribed, ask your health provider for tips on how to relieve symptoms. The chart provides a guide for when antibiotics may be needed for common respiratory infections. To learn more about antibiotic prescribing and use, visit www.cdc.gov/antibiotic-use.

Heritage Valley’s seven ConvenientCare clinics are a great place to turn to for diagnosis and treatment of respiratory illnesses, such as colds; flu, Covid and RSV; sinus infections; bronchitis; pneumonia; or asthma flare-ups. In order to provide you with the best care, our staff follows the most appropriate medical guidelines.  Rapid testing is available for strep throat and Covid.
