Cheers! to Good Health

The tradition continues, but at a new location this year! Join us at the Pittsburgh Airport Marriott for delicious cuisine, fine wine, cocktails and craft beer as we celebrate Heritage Valley Health System’s commitment to community health and wellness.

The event will be held on Saturday, April 18, from 7 – 10 pm. Tickets and hotel reservations (discounted room rate if reserved before March 27) are available online or by scanning the QR code. The Marriott is located at 777 Aten Road in Coraopolis.

Proceeds from the event support security advancements in the Emergency Departments at Heritage Valley Beaver and Heritage Valley Sewickley hospitals.

Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, a time dedicated to increasing awareness about colorectal cancer and emphasizing the importance of early detection and screening. Colorectal cancer is highly treatable if caught in the early stages. According to the American Cancer Society, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women in the United States (excluding skin cancers). Unfortunately, many people with colorectal cancer may experience no symptoms, which is why regular screenings are so important.

Finding cancer early, when it’s small and hasn’t spread, often allows for more treatment options. Removing polyps during screening colonoscopies significantly reduces colon cancer development later in life. The most reliable way to detect polyps is through a screening colonoscopy.

Certain risk factors, such as a diet high in red and processed meats, obesity, smoking and lack of exercise can be attributed to certain cancers, although having risk factors does not necessarily mean that you will get the disease.

Talk with your health care provider right away if you experience any of the following symptoms:

  • A persistent change in bowel habits, including diarrhea or constipation
  • Rectal bleeding or blood in your stool
  • Stools that are more narrow than usual
  • Persistent abdominal discomfort, such as cramps, gas or pain
  • A feeling that your bowel doesn’t empty completely
  • Unexplained weakness or fatigue
  • Weight loss for no apparent reason

Please discuss colorectal cancer screening with your physician.
