Diabetes Prevention Program

The Heritage Valley Diabetes Prevention Program is a year-long program focusing on healthy lifestyle modifications to prevent the development of type 2 diabetes. We will be launching four additional classes, beginning the week of May 5, 2025.

What is pre-diabetes? This means that your blood sugar is higher than normal, but not high enough to have type 2 diabetes. More than one in three American adults has pre-diabetes, although nine out of 10 people don’t realize that they have it. If you have pre-diabetes, you are more at risk to develop diabetes, have heart disease or experience a stroke. The good news is that losing weight and being active can cut your risk of type 2 diabetes in half.

Please click here for eligibility requirements. If you are interested in enrolling in a class or have questions, please call our Diabetes Prevention Program line at 724.773.4708 and one of our Certified Lifestyle Coaches will be happy to assist.

Terry

Center Township Medical Neighborhood Office Assistant

If you find yourself at the Center Township Medical Neighborhood, chances are good that you will meet Terry who, as her manager states, is “amazing ... very friendly and helpful!” Terry loves the strong sense of teamwork and collaborative environment that exists within the medical neighborhood. She especially credits fellow employee Barb B. with mentoring and supporting her. Terry states that the opportunity to learn and grow professionally is something that she deeply values, noting that her department truly invests in employee training and development.  We are happy to have Terry as part of the Heritage Valley team!

Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, a time when we emphasize the importance of early detection and screening. Colorectal cancer is highly treatable if caught in the early stages. According to the American Cancer Society, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women in the United States (excluding skin cancers). Unfortunately, many people with colorectal cancer may experience no symptoms, which is why regular screenings are so important.

Finding cancer early, when it’s small and hasn’t spread, often allows for more treatment options. Removing polyps during screening colonoscopies significantly reduces colon cancer development later in life. And, the most reliable way to detect polyps is through a screening colonoscopy.

Certain risk factors, such as a diet high in red and processed meats, obesity, smoking and lack of exercise can be attributed to certain cancers, although having risk factors does not necessarily mean that you will get the disease.

Symptoms of colorectal cancer may include:

  • A persistent change in bowel habits, including diarrhea or constipation
  • Rectal bleeding or blood in your stool
  • Persistent abdominal discomfort, such as cramps, gas or pain
  • A feeling that your bowel doesn’t empty completely
  • Weakness or fatigue
  • Unexplained weight loss

Please discuss colorectal cancer screening with your physician.
