Healthy Eating Can Control or Prevent Diabetes
By Hira Ali, MD of Heritage Valley Multispecialty Group Endocrinology
|
|
Diabetes is perhaps the disease most directly affected by what we eat, which is great news as this is always something we can control. Having said that, this is easier said than done. In a world that is dominated by carbohydrates and sugary treats for every occasion, eating healthy can be a daunting task. However, research has shown us time and time again that the benefits of making healthier food choices are innumerable, ranging from the big contenders such as prevention and control of diabetes and heart disease, all the way to just generally feeling well, which is often underrated.
It is not surprising then that the biggest trial on prevention of diabetes ever conducted, the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) Trial with over 3,000 participants, clearly demonstrated that lifestyle intervention, including healthy food choices and physical activity, is the best way to prevent diabetes... even better than medications. Even when someone is on multiple medications, nutrition always remains the cornerstone for management of their diabetes.
When it comes to diabetes, eating a diet lower in simple sugars and processed foods is the way to go. Easily absorbed sugars, such as those in soda and bakery items (e.g. cookies and donuts, etc.), can increase your blood sugar very quickly and make it difficult to manage. Additionally, the body starts depending on these sugary foods for easy energy leading to more sugar cravings, which can cycle into weight gain and worsening of diabetes.
There are certainly some practical steps that you can take today. Remember to always make sure that your nutritional goals are measurable. It is easy to fall into the trap of “I will watch my diet” or “I will eat healthier,” but what does that mean for you? Start with limiting your sweets by number of times per week or your soda by number of cans a week. Eliminate bedtime snacking by closing out the kitchen after dinner every night. Take the time to plan your meals ahead of time, so you don’t reach for the peanut butter crackers when you are hungry. Name one non-starchy vegetable and focus on eating it at least 5 times that month. During a meal, eat your proteins/fats first and carbohydrates last, which will help slow down their absorption.
Whether you are trying to control your diabetes or prevent it, healthier eating will always benefit you. Start today!
