Superintendent's Weekly Message

HBCSD students and families, please help me welcome Sandy Skora to Hermosa View School starting on Tuesday, January 21, 2025. Ms. Skora joins us as an interim principal with 34 years of educational experience and 15 years as an elementary principal. We are so happy to have her to complete our leadership team. Please note that Ms. Skora does have a few previous commitments that may take her away from campus. In those instances, Sylvia Gluck, Executive Director of Administrative Services, or myself will be on campus.

We are also thrilled to share an exciting milestone in the journey of the Hermosa Beach City School District’s Measure HV General Obligation Bond! On Wednesday, January 8, the Board approved a consultant agreement with District Advocacy Group, a strategic planning partner that will work directly with the District on the implementation and management of the bond. This important step sets the stage for outlining our goals, designing an implementation plan, and bringing the Measure HV vision to life.

In the coming months, we will be working diligently to lay the foundation for the projects funded by this bond. To keep you informed, we are also building a dedicated Measure HV webpage where you can find up-to-date information, public updates, and progress reports.

Thank you for your continued support as we work together to enhance our schools and provide the best educational environment for our students. Stay tuned for more updates and opportunities to provide stakeholder input as we embark on this exciting journey!

Warm regards,

Dr. Susan Wildes

Superintendent of Schools, Hermosa Beach City School District

Supporting Families Affected by the Los Angeles Wildfires

Hermosa Beach City School District (HBCSD), Manhattan Beach Unified (MBUSD), and Redondo Beach Unified (RBUSD) stand united in supporting families impacted by the devastating LA Wildfires.

We are here to assist displaced families with school enrollment and provide resources for a smooth transition. While documentation can help establish your child’s school record, it is not required. Our priority is helping your children get back to learning with minimal disruption. Staff are here to guide you every step of the way. For more information, visit our Enrollment Support for Families Impacted by the LA Wildfires web page.

When looking for ways to provide much-needed relief, we encourage our South Bay communities to donate to SupplyBank.org and the American Red Cross to support families affected by the wildfires.

Families, staff, and community, you can help our districts by spreading the word. Share and like our social posts on our Hermosa Schools Instagram and Facebook.

Together, we are stronger!

Hermosa View & Vista School Principal News

Tuesday marks the 90th day of school, the halfway point in the school year! This midyear milestone is a perfect time to revisit our S.U.R.F. expectations. At View and Vista, dolphins are:

Safe

Up for a Challenge

Responsible, and

Friendly

These values guide our students in making mindful choices in and out of the classroom.

At our next flag ceremony, we’ll focus on what it means to be Responsible, with an emphasis on snack and lunchtime behaviors. We’ll discuss the importance of staying seated while eating, cleaning up after ourselves, and being respectful to all staff and students. Let’s continue to work together to make the second half of the year just as successful as the first!

Warmly,

Hillary Overbeck, Hermosa View & Vista Principal

Beach Cities Tri-District Student Survey (Phase 2)

On January 29 and 30, 2025, all 3rd through 8th-grade students in the Hermosa Beach City School District will be participating in the Beach Cities Tri-District Social-Emotional Learning and Student Inclusion Survey. This survey, conducted across Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, and Redondo Beach, is designed to gather and analyze data that will inform the development of programs focused on social-emotional wellness, inclusion, and a sense of belonging for our students.

Survey Participation:

We highly encourage student participation in this survey, as the feedback collected will provide valuable insights into students' experiences in our district and help us improve the ways we support them. Please note that students will have the option to skip any questions they are uncomfortable answering. The survey will be administered in their homeroom classes.

To view the survey, click here.

If you would prefer your child to opt out of the survey, please complete the Opt Out Form by 3:30 PM on Wednesday, January 22, 2025.

Thank you for your support as we work together to ensure the well-being and inclusion of all our students.

Hermosa Valley School Principal News

Next week through the first week of February, we’re kicking off A Day in the Life of a Student for the second year in a row! This special experience was a huge hit last year, and we’re excited to bring it back. We have invited students to participate, and they have opted in for this fun challenge, which allows teachers to walk in their shoes and see the school through their eyes! From walking their bike to taking tests, dressing out for PE, eating lunch, keeping their phones away, and making it to class on time—they’ll do it all, just like our students.

We’re also excited to invite all new Valley students and families (including incoming 5th grade students at Vista) to the Prospective Hermosa Valley Preview Day on Saturday, January 25th, from 10:00–11:30 a.m. This event includes a presentation followed by campus tours. Attendees will learn about Hermosa Valley’s programs (Electives, Clubs, & After School Athletics), the enrollment process, interdistrict attendance permits, volunteer opportunities with HVPTO and HBEF, and why we’re the Best Little School District in the South Bay. Kindly RSVP to attend.

We look forward to connecting with you at these upcoming events!

Warmly,

Jessica Bledsoe, Hermosa Valley Principal
