Parenting in a Digital World Tip #8: Can I set parental controls in specific apps, such as Snapchat and TikTok?
This tip comes from Common Sense Media.
In addition to blocking specific people, most social media apps let you disable features that could pose some risks for kids. For example, you may be able to turn off chat, restrict conversation to friends only, and hide your child's profile so that it won't show up in search results. Some apps go a step further by letting users control their own use of the app. Instagram's Your Activity feature, for example, shows you how much time you've spent in the app and lets you set limits for yourself. YouTube has a similar feature that reminds users to take a break. TikTok even allows parents to set limits and remotely manage their kids' TikTok account from their phone using its Family Pairing feature. To find out if your kids' favorite apps offer any types of restrictions, go to the app's settings section (usually represented by the gear icon). Unless an app offers passcode protection for its settings (and most don't), your kid can easily reverse them.

“Behind every successful student is a team of parents and teachers who never stop believing in them." — Unknown
Parents and guardians, thank you for partnering with us to support our students. We appreciate the collaboration and care you bring to our school community during HVS Parent/Teacher Conferences. On Monday, November 10, we have our last conferences scheduled, so remember that dismissal times are as follows: TK (12:15 PM), Kinder (12:20 PM), and 1st Grade (12:25 PM).
A heartfelt thank you to our Principal Advisory Council for taking time out of their day to represent the parent voice at our first meeting! We’re so grateful for your collaboration and dedication to our school community
Please remind your child about our View Lunch Clubs so they can take full advantage of the great opportunities available to them throughout the week!
This Friday, November 14, from 9:00 to 9:30 AM, we will hold our next View Flag Assembly to honor students who exemplify our S.U.R.F. standard of “Respect.” If your child is being recognized, you should have been notified, and you are welcome to join us to celebrate their special recognition.
Warmly,

It has been wonderful to see so many of our parents and guardians visiting their child’s classrooms during our HVS Parent/Teacher Conferences. We hope these moments have provided you with meaningful insights into your child’s growth as a student at Vista and an opportunity to see their classroom learning in action. We have one more day of conferences and a minimum day on Monday, November 10, so please remember that dismissal times are as follows: 2nd Grade (12:20 PM), 3rd Grade (12:10 PM), and 4th Grade (12:15 PM).
Last Friday, we celebrated our S.U.R.F. expectation of being “Up for a Challenge” at our Vista Flag Ceremony. Students recognized for this honor have demonstrated incredible persistence, resilience, and a willingness to take on difficult tasks, even when things didn’t come easily. We’re so proud of our Vista student honorees for modeling these qualities both in their classrooms and during Specials.
As a final reminder, our 2nd grade Girl Scout troop’s Project Needs Donation Drive wraps up on Friday, November 14. Please bring the suggested toiletries listed on the flyer and drop them off in the bin located in our Vista front office. Thank you for helping to spread kindness and thoughtfulness this Thanksgiving season.
Warmly,
Grace Yang, Hermosa Vista Principal

Thank you for your partnership and engagement during HVS Parent/Teacher Conferences. We truly appreciate the time and care you dedicate to supporting your child’s growth. It makes a lasting impact. Conferences will conclude on Monday, November 10, with all Valley students being dismissed at 12:25 PM.
As we move further into November, we would like to remind families about the importance of middle school service points. Each grade level has a minimum service point requirement for participation in events and activities, with expectations increasing as the school year progresses. Service points can be earned through many ways, such as helping teachers, assisting around campus, or supporting HVPTO events. Please note that students must meet their service, attendance, and behavior expectations to participate in major events such as Outdoor Education Camp and 8th Grade Promotion activities. If your student is still unsure, please encourage them to reach out to their advisory teacher for guidance and review our Protocol for Participation.
At Hermosa Valley, we continue to emphasize the importance of Riding the WAVE every day. We are especially proud of our 5th and 8th graders who represented our school with such dignity and respect at the recent RBUSD Fall Fitness Day. It was inspiring to see them interact so positively with others. Families should be very proud of them!
Warmly,
Jessica Bledsoe, Hermosa Valley Principal
