Superintendent's Weekly Message
Dear HVS Families,
We are dedicated to fostering a safe and supportive environment that enables every child to achieve academic success. To enhance our security efforts, Hermosa Valley School will introduce Sprigeo, a confidential online system that allows students to report bullying incidents and school safety concerns. This system offers an additional way for students to communicate with our school administration when bullying or school safety incidents occur. Sprigeo has been successfully implemented at Mira Costa High School and Redondo Union High School, demonstrating its effectiveness.
How does the Sprigeo system work?
Students, families, and community members can access the reporting form through a link on our school website or at SPRIGEO.COM. After completing and submitting the form, the report is sent securely to our school and district administrators and, if necessary, the Hermosa Beach Police Department (HBPD).
What can be reported?
- Safety threats, bullying, harassment, or intimidation (at or outside of school)
- Cyberbullying (e.g. Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, etc.)
- Fights, drugs, alcohol, or weapons at school
- Friends who talk about hurting themselves
Why use an online reporting system?
The primary reason children do not report bullying or abuse is the fear of retaliation, embarrassment, or being labeled a “snitch.” Sprigeo allows reports to be made privately from a home computer or any other internet-enabled device, eliminating the risk of being identified by another student.
The Hermosa Valley School and District administration are currently training on Sprigeo to ensure a smooth rollout for all Valley students and staff this month. We appreciate your support and patience as we implement this important tool. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out.
Warm regards,
Dr. Susan Wildes
Superintendent of Schools, Hermosa Beach City School District

Hermosa View & Vista School Principal News
Welcome to December! I hope you’ve enjoyed some special family time this past Thanksgiving Week. With the holiday season approaching, some families may be unwrapping new bikes, so this is the perfect opportunity to reiterate bike safety. Please remember that bicycles must follow the same traffic laws as cars. This means stopping at stop signs, riding on the right side of the road, and following the flow of one-way traffic. It is important for adults to demonstrate these cycling practices on streets and in parking lots to ensure a safe environment. It keeps our community safe and models safe choices for our students. Thank you for prioritizing safety and helping us build a healthy, responsible community. Wishing you a safe and joy-filled holiday season ahead!
Warmly,
Hillary Overbeck, Hermosa View & Vista Principal

Head Lice: Know the Signs,
Stop the Spread
Taking a proactive approach is key to preventing the spread of head lice. While lice don’t carry diseases, they do require treatment. We encourage you to regularly check your child’s scalp for signs of lice, such as frequent scratching, live lice, or tiny nits (eggs).
There are ways to help prevent the spread of head lice. The single most important rule is: “Never Share What Touches the Hair.” Teach your child to avoid sharing items like combs, brushes, hats, scarves, hair accessories, scrunchies, helmets, headphones, or pillows. For children with long hair, keeping hair tied back in braids or ponytails and using sprays like tea tree oil or other over-the-counter treatments can also help reduce the risk of spreading lice.
If lice are detected:
- Please notify your child’s school by emailing the health office.
- Treat your child’s hair with lice shampoo. Over-the-counter products and medications prescribed by a doctor are available to treat lice.
- Check the hair of everyone in your household to see if they have head lice. Everyone in the home with head lice needs to be treated on the same day.
- Remove nits by combing daily using a long-tooth metal nit comb.
- Wash all sheets, pillows, blankets, sleeping bags, combs, and brushes in hot water. Heat-dry non-washable clothing or other fabric items in a clothes dryer on hot for 20 minutes. Stuffed animals and non-washable articles can be placed in sealed plastic bags for at least two weeks to kill lice and/or eggs. Rugs, furniture, etc., should be vacuumed thoroughly to eliminate further problems.
- Retreatment is often needed 7-10 days after the first treatment when nits hatch and more head lice are found.
- Continue to check for nits and lice daily for 4-6 weeks.

Hermosa Valley School Principal News
I trust you had a restful and joyful Thanksgiving break. As we transition into the heart of the school year, I want to take a moment to reflect on the incredible work our students have been doing. I have been quite impressed with the academic progress, social growth, and dedication to learning that our 5th through 8th graders have demonstrated.
Looking ahead, I’m excited to share that our 8th Grade AstroCamp is quickly approaching! The camp is scheduled for January 15-17, and we are eagerly preparing for this memorable experience. However, we still need 1-2 chaperones to help make this trip possible. If you are interested or would like more information, please reach out to Ms. Shin for details. Your involvement would mean so much to our students and staff!
As we prepare for the upcoming holidays, I encourage you to reference our school calendar when finalizing your winter break plans. Having your children on campus every day is imperative to their academic success, and we want to ensure they don’t miss any of the valuable learning opportunities planned for this time of year.
Lastly, please take a moment to review the Valley Camp and Activity Participation Citizenship Referral Process to ensure all students meet the expectations required for these opportunities. Your support in reinforcing these guidelines at home helps our students thrive and succeed in all they do.
Thank you for your continued partnership and support. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if there’s anything I can assist with.
Warmly,
Jessica Bledsoe, Hermosa Valley Principal
