Superintendent's Weekly Message
Dear HVS Families,
The Hermosa Beach Education Foundation (HBEF) plays a vital role in enriching the educational experience for all HBCSD students, funding programs and resources that inspire creativity, critical thinking, and academic success. Their unwavering dedication ensures that every student has access to opportunities that go beyond the basics, shaping a brighter future for our community. As the year comes to a close, consider making an end-of-year donation to support this invaluable mission. Your generosity directly impacts our schools, helping to sustain and expand these transformative programs. Together, we can empower the next generation and continue to make education a top priority.
I also want to take a moment to share my deep appreciation for the dedication and passion of the incredible teachers and staff of HBCSD, who make a difference every day. This December, we proudly spotlight Cindy Grellner, our talented Speech Pathologist, in a special video. Watch and celebrate her outstanding work supporting our students’ communication and growth.
Wishing the HBCSD community a joyful holiday break filled with warmth, laughter, and relaxation. Thank you for an amazing start to the school year—see you in 2024!
Warm regards,
Dr. Susan Wildes
Superintendent of Schools, Hermosa Beach City School District

As winter break approaches, we invite you to slow down, recharge, and embrace the peace this season can bring.
The holidays are often filled with joy and connection, but they can also bring challenges—whether it’s missing a loved one, juggling holiday preparations, or managing the pressures of the season. Whether you or a family member need support with mental health or substance use, Care Solace can connect you to care options that meet your needs quickly, confidentially, and at no cost to you.
How to Access Support:
- Call (888) 515-0595.
-
Visit CARESOLACE.COM/HBCSD.
- Search for providers independently or click “Book Appointment” for assistance via video chat, phone, or email.

Hermosa View & Vista School Principal News
As the holidays draw near, many of us are unpacking treasured traditions and cultural pieces that make this season special. At Hermosa Schools, we are committed to celebrating the richness and diversity of our community by bringing these experiences into our students' learning. This January, we’ll hold a Cultural Day at View (January 10th) and Vista (January 17th), and we are looking for families to host a table representing your culture and heritage. We’ll provide the table, and families will get to decide how to share. Here are some ideas to get you thinking:
- Wear/display traditional clothing.
- Share holiday traditions, games, sports, or crafts.
- Showcase flags, artwork, books, and other artifacts that represent your country.
- Play music or share your native language.
Feel free to partner with another family to co-host! The timeframe for hosting a table will depend on participation interest and can range from 1 to 4 hours. If you would like to host a table, please complete this interest form by Friday, December 20. Special note: If you are partnering with a family, please only have one person submit the interest form. Thank you for your interest in sharing your culture with students!
Happy Holidays! Have a great Winter Break!
Warmly,
Hillary Overbeck, Hermosa View & Vista Principal

Coping with Stress
For many, winter break is a time of joy, celebration, and tradition. However, the shift in routine, expectations, and the absence of loved ones can also mean that it can be a time of stress. Just like adults, children also experience stress. The difference is that they may not have the coping skills to handle these situations. As adults, it is important that we not only manage our own stress but also support children in developing coping skills to help them manage theirs.
A coping skill is anything we do to help us manage our emotions and feel more calm. Coping strategies can fall under one of four categories:
-
Relaxation - What helps you feel calm? Relaxation is about soothing yourself and finding an activity that lowers your stress. Some examples might be deep breathing, walking, stretching, or listening to music.
-
Distraction - Distractors are strategies that help you forget about the stressor. Think about activities that take all your attention! Examples might include working out, drawing, or cooking.
-
Emotional Regulation - Emotional regulation is all about finding ways to reflect on and express your feelings in a productive and safe way. It involves activities that help you feel your emotions and use them to help you make helpful decisions and take positive action. Some examples are journaling, drawing, talking your feelings out, etc.
-
Mindfulness - Much of our stress comes from worrying about the past and the future. Mindfulness activities help us focus on the present instead of allowing our minds to stress about what has already happened or what we expect to happen. Mindful activities bring us back to our present experience and include breathing activities, sensory play, and intentionally noticing sensory input.
When supporting children in managing this stress, it is important to be patient and remember that every child is different, so you may have to try different techniques to find what works for them. Below are some helpful tips to support your child:
-
Help Them Identify Feelings - Using the feelings wheel can help them build language to communicate feelings.
-
Try New Skills - Keep trying different strategies and techniques. Try some breathing strategies.
-
Do it with Them - Managing stress can be fun and a great way to connect. To help them engage, try these fun coping strategies.
The Hermosa Schools Counseling Department hopes you have a safe Winter Break. We look forward to continuing our work in the new year!

Hermosa Valley School Principal News
As we reflect on our students' academic, executive functioning, and social-emotional needs, it has become clear that we must adapt to fully support the unique challenges of this new generation of children. With this in mind, we have decided to explore an alternate bell schedule for Valley that better supports our students' overall success.
To ensure this process reflects the diverse needs of our community, we are forming a Bell Schedule Committee. This committee will include voices from parents/guardians, students, and staff to thoughtfully consider the strengths and limitations of our current schedule, identify key “must haves,” review examples from other schools, visit campuses, and establish non-negotiables for a new schedule together.
Below are the meeting details:
-
Trimester 2 Meeting Dates: Fridays; 1/17, 2/7, 2/21, 3/4, & 3/7
-
Time: 3:00–3:30 PM
-
Location: Hermosa Valley School
Our plan is to pilot a sample schedule in Trimester 3 and identify any areas for improvement. The ultimate goal is to implement a new bell schedule with built-in advisory time by the start of the 2025-2026 school year.
We are seeking four parents and four students to join the committee and contribute to this important initiative. If interested, please complete this form by Friday, January 10.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership. Together, we can create a schedule that evolves with the changing needs of our students and fosters their growth and success.
Wishing you a wonderful Winter Break!
Warmly,
Jessica Bledsoe, Hermosa Valley Principal
