Superintendent's Weekly Message

Dear HVS Families, Teachers, & Staff,

Cultural Days at Hermosa View and Hermosa Vista were a vibrant celebration of student and family diversity, learning, and connection. Students explored a variety of cultures through interactive exhibits and hands-on activities, including wearing or displaying traditional clothing, sharing holiday traditions, playing games and sports, engaging in crafts, showcasing flags, artwork, books, and other artifacts, playing music, and learning about native languages from around the world. This event provided a unique opportunity to foster appreciation and understanding of different backgrounds while creating memorable experiences for everyone involved.

We extend our deepest gratitude to all the parents/guardians, teachers, and staff who dedicated their time, energy, and creativity to make Cultural Days a success. Your contributions, from organizing activities to sharing personal cultural stories, created an inspiring and enriching environment for our students. Thank you for helping us celebrate the beauty of our community and families!

Warm regards,

Dr. Susan Wildes

Celebrating Our Hermosa Schools Counselors During National School Counseling Week!

From February 3–7, 2025, HBCSD will join schools nationwide in celebrating the American School Counselor Association's (ASCA) National School Counseling Week, themed "School Counseling: Helping Students Thrive."

Our Hermosa Schools Counselors, Troi Boucher and Cassy Ryley, will use this week to promote a collaborative approach to supporting students, highlighting the vital role school counselors play in fostering academic success, emotional well-being, and career readiness.

Tech Safety Coffee Talk this Wednesday!

Join us for Tech Safety Coffee Talk this Wednesday, February 5, at 9:00 AM in the Hermosa Valley Conference Room 4. This engaging session will feature Julie Cordua, CEO of Thorn.org, and a local Hermosa parent who is dedicated to protecting children online. Julie will discuss her organization's vital mission to combat online child sex abuse and trafficking while sharing practical strategies to help parents navigate these difficult yet essential conversations with their kids. This event is open to all adults, and coffee will be provided. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn from a leading expert on child safety and technology and gain valuable insights on creating a safer digital environment for our children.

Hermosa View School Interim Principal News

This week, our 1st graders continue to take the i-Ready assessment in reading and math, with the last day scheduled for February 21st. The data from this assessment will be invaluable in showing us how each student is progressing in their academics. It will also allow our teachers to know which students may need Tier I intervention to support their learning. Please be sure that during this time of assessment, your child is getting a good night’s sleep and a good breakfast.

Additionally, our Lost & Found has become very, very crowded. At the end of this week, all unclaimed items, including coats, jackets, sweaters, lunch boxes, and water bottles, will be donated to charity. Please feel free to check out our Lost & Found area by the library for any missing items you feel your child has lost. Teachers will be bringing students by the Lost & Found prior to the end of this week so that they may be able to claim their belongings. In the future, if you could please label all personal items with your child’s name, we can be sure they get returned. Thanks for your help!

Kind regards,

Sandy Skora, Hermosa View Interim Principal

Hermosa Vista School Principal News

Starting next week, our 3rd and 4th graders will begin taking the CAASPP interim assessments, which will familiarize students with the testing platform and provide valuable practice ahead of the state testing in May. The assessments help build confidence so students feel more comfortable when it’s time for the official test while also giving teachers information to help guide their instruction. To support your child, you can encourage healthy habits at home by ensuring students get plenty of rest, eat a nutritious breakfast, and arrive at school on time. A positive outlook and encouragement go a long way, and we appreciate your help in making this a low-stress, supportive experience for our students!

Warmly,

Hillary Overbeck, Hermosa Vista Principal

Hermosa Vista Student Council Fundraiser: Help Support Families Affected by the Wildfires!

The Hermosa Vista Student Council is leading a fundraiser to support families affected by the recent wildfires. From February 18-28, they will be collecting U.S. bills and coins (no pennies, please). Check for loose change over the break, and bring your donations to school when you return! Drop them off in the plastic tubs in the Vista front office to help make a difference. All proceeds will be donated to SupplyBank.org to provide essential supplies to disaster-affected communities in California. Thank you for your generosity!

Hermosa Valley School Principal News

I’m looking forward to seeing our 5th graders arrive at school this Tuesday as we celebrate the 100th day of school! It’s always a fun and creative milestone, and I can’t wait to see how students bring it to life.

This week also marks the final week of our winter after-school sports session. Come cheer on our teams as they take on RIS and ESMS in their last matches of the season (both away games). We are so proud of the dedication and teamwork our student-athletes have shown!

Be on the lookout for the Spirit Games Survey coming this week—every student who wants to participate will have the chance to do so! Thank you for your patience as we’ve refined this event. We think we’ve found just the right mix to celebrate our school spirit and togetherness.

Finally, I look forward to seeing our students fully engaged in learning right up until 2:56 p.m. on Friday before they head off for a well-earned Presidents’ Break!

See you all this week!

Warmly,

Jessica Bledsoe, Hermosa Valley Principal

Utility Box Artwork Project in Front of Valley School

Exciting news! A new community beautification project is coming to Hermosa Valley School! As part of Capital Improvement Program (CIP) Project 109, the utility box in front of the school has been selected for a vibrant transformation featuring artwork by a talented local artist. The design, inspired by our dolphin mascot, will showcase dolphins in the artist’s signature realistic style.

Before the artwork can be installed, the existing utility box needs to be replaced due to its condition. The replacement is scheduled for Thursday, February 6, from 9:00 AM-2:00 PM, with efforts in place to minimize traffic disruptions.

Anticipated Impacts

  • Temporary Power Shutoff: Limited to the utility box
  • Affected Areas: Traffic Signal and Digital Valley Marquee in front of Hermosa Valley School

We appreciate your patience as the City of Hermosa Beach prepares for this exciting addition to our school community! If you have any questions, please contact Karla Vargas at (310) 318-0270 or kvargas@hermosabeach.gov.
