On Monday, July 17th, Hernando County Human Resources hosted an employee benefits fair at Nature Coast Technical High School. Employees had the opportunity to learn more about their benefits and visited with health related vendors.

Waterways/Aquatic Services | |
Check out this great upgrade to Hernando County's boat ramp systems through the Waterways Department. New boat docks were installed at Bayport Park and Hernando Beach over the summer.

Applications are now being accepted through the Emergency Roof Repair program which provides a twenty-year zero interest-deferred loan of up to $15,000.00 to qualified homeowners to replace their roof. On July 7th, the Hernando County Public Library System hosted their Mermaid Statue Unveiling at the Main Library Branch (238 Howell Avenue) in beautiful downtown Brooksville.
Details about the Mermaid:
- 'Undine': Inspired by a fairytale novella by Friedrich de la Motte Fouque published in 1811, Undine, is a water spirit who marries a knight in order to gain a soul.

Beginning July 25, 2023, Hernando County Solid Waste will be allowing residents to use the Convenience Centers with a trailer up to five times within a calendar year, no matter the number of properties owned. Convenience Centers provide service for single family homes within the county. All debris coming from properties, other than single family homes, vacant lots, and businesses must be taken to the Northwest Solid Waste Facility, to be weighed and charged for disposal.
Residents using trailers and trucks to haul debris to the Convenience Centers, must haul their materials safely. It is understood that certain items such as couches, cabinets, tables, etc. may exceed the two-foot trailer height. In these situations, the items must be placed in trailers/trucks in such a manner that the height of the object is at its minimum. Furthermore, the sum of all debris shall not exceed 100 cubic feet. Loads not meeting these requirements shall be required to go to the Northwest Solid Waste Facility. In order to provide a service to a large number of residents, residents are allowed one trip per day, no matter the number of properties owned. In excess of 1 trip per day will be required to use the Northwest Solid Waste Facility.

Trailers and Truck Limits:
- Trailers must be less than 5' wide and 10' in length and 2' in height in order to access the convenience centers.

All oversized vehicles and trailers (dump trucks/trailers, moving vans, etc.) are prohibited from using the Convenience Centers. All oversize vehicles and trailers must use the Northwest Solid Waste & Recycling Facility (County Landfill).

Residents will be allowed to use the Convenience Centers with a trailer five times within calendar year, no matter the number of properties owned.

Emergency Management
Hernando County’s Emergency Management (EM) hosted their 2nd Annual HERricane Camp for young girls ages 12-17. These eager and enthusiastic campers learned about emergency management, preparedness, and public safety. The staff from EM were thrilled to teach the excited campers about the many facets and disciplines within the emergency career field.

During the July 11, 2023, BOCC meeting, James Morris from CEMEX Construction Materials Florida, LLC was in attendance along with Hernando County's Economic Development Director Valerie Pianta. Mr. Morris presented CEMEX Construction Materials Florida, LLC's donation of land for Hernando County Government to build the Hernando County Fire Rescue & Sheriff's Office Public Safety Training Facility on Citrus Way. | |

In 2022, the BOCC requested the Spring Protection Zone for the Weeki Wachee River through the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). On July 19, 2023, the FWC Commission took a vote in St. Petersburg, FL at their Commission meeting and decided to move forward with implementing the Springs Protection Zone in the Weeki Wachee River. More details to come from FWC regarding the rules and regulations implemented into the river.

At the July 25, 2023, BOCC meeting, a vote of 4 to 1 from the commissioners set the maximum millage rate for the General Fund to 6.9912. The total millage rate for the County for FY 2023-2024 is 8.9344, which is the rate that is used to calculate Hernando County’s property tax.

Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC) | |
The CAC is an advisory board which assists the MPO in conducting effective public information and participation programs, and advising the MPO of public opinion on policy issues to be considered by the MPO.

Transportation Disadvantaged Local Coordinating Board (TDLCB) | |
The TDLCB assists the Community Transportation Coordinator with transportation disadvantaged services to those persons who because of physical or mental disability, income status, or age are unable to transport themselves or to purchase transportation and are, therefore, dependent upon others to obtain access to health care, employment, education, shopping, social activities, or other life-sustaining activities, or children who are handicapped or high-risk or at-risk.
