OPA!
Hernando County's annual Greek Fest was held on February 3rd and 4th. There was free admission, free parking and a free kid zone!
This fun event was hosted at Christ the Savior Orthodox Christian Church on Spring Hill Drive.
It was two days of Greek food, desserts, entertainment, vendors and much more.
Hernando County's Public Information team had a table top at the event and connected citizens with County services.

February 5th kicked off 2024's Severe Weather Awareness Week! The Emergency Management team participated in a practice tornado drill.
Florida averages over 70 thunderstorm days a year. Tornadoes usually last less than 15 minutes, but can travel dozens of miles, even skipping above the ground.

Judicial Center Renovations are ongoing. As the population continues to grow so does the need for more courtrooms, the expansion of offices and additional courtrooms. The project is expected to be completed in the next few months. The new ADA accessible lobby entrance has been completed along with 7 new ADA Parking spaces.

The BOCC chose to rename Kennedy Park to honor the life of Coach Lorenzo Hamilton, Sr. and the impact he had on the community. Hernando County Government hosted a ceremony on February 3, 2024, to unveil brand new signage displayed at the park. The public was encouraged to attend and it was a great turnout! Chairwoman, Beth Narverud, along with Commissioners Jerry Campbell, John Allocco and Brain Hawkins were in attendance. | |
Development Services
Lake Hideway is a project that received its approval of a revision to its Master Development Plan from the Board of County Commissioners on February 8, 2022 (The original development order was approved by the County Commission in February 2010). The adopted Master Development Plan specifies that the 896 acre parcel may be developed with the following:
- 3,700 residential dwelling units consisting of 2,400 single-family homes, 644 townhouses, and 656 senior adult attached homes.
- 5,000 square feet of commercial use on US 19.
- 25,000 square feet of commercial and 150,000 square feet of office use on the portion of the project that is accessed at Hexam Road.
- A Lagoon active recreational water amenity consisting of entertainment, food and beverage, passive and active recreation, health club, spa, and event venue.
- Dedication of one (1) acre for public safety
- Dedication of six (6) acres for a charter school
- Preservation of natural landscaped buffers and creation of passive recreational uses to include pedestrian trails, hiking, walking, picnic tables, etc.

During the January 23rd, 2024 BOCC meeting, Janine Kell, Director of The Children's Advocacy Center, accepted a Proclamation declaring January as National Human Trafficking month.
Other members of the community that work closely with the CAC were also in attendance, including The Hernando County Sheriff's Office and The Department of Children and Families.

During the January 23rd, 2024 BOCC meeting, Rev. Dr. Emery Ailes accepted the Resolution proclaiming January as Black History Month.
Throughout our history, African Americans have courageously worn our Nation's uniform while defending peace and liberty around the globe, and as of present, there are more than 2 million black veterans.

On Saturday, January, 27th, 2024, the community attended the second annual Mel Greene Foundation's Anti-Human Trafficking Awareness Light Up the Night event.
The Children's Advocacy Center and Warrior 321 hosted the evening with face painting, music, food trucks and education. Also, there was a Human Trafficking survivor who told her impactful story to the crowd.

Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC) | |
The CAC is an advisory board which assists the MPO in conducting effective public information and participation programs, and advising the MPO of public opinion on policy issues to be considered by the MPO.

Transportation Disadvantaged Local Coordinating Board (TDLCB) | |
The TDLCB assists the Community Transportation Coordinator with transportation disadvantaged services to those persons who because of physical or mental disability, income status, or age are unable to transport themselves or to purchase transportation and are, therefore, dependent upon others to obtain access to health care, employment, education, shopping, social activities, or other life-sustaining activities, or children who are handicapped or high-risk or at-risk.
